Inventory Management Best Practices
Effective inventory management is paramount to surviving the horrors of Raccoon City. Jill's limited 8-slot inventory means every item carried must serve a purpose. Unlike previous installments, there are no item boxes for storage; instead, you'll rely on strategic item drops and careful planning.
General Principles
- Prioritize Combat Essentials: Always carry your primary weapon, a secondary weapon (like the Shotgun or Grenade Launcher), and sufficient ammunition. Healing items are also non-negotiable.
- Know Your Routes: Familiarize yourself with the map. Dropping key items in accessible, safe areas can save precious inventory slots and backtracking time.
- Combine Wisely: Mix Herbs (Green + Green = 20% heal, Green + Green + Green = 60% heal, Green + Red = 100% heal) and reload weapons whenever possible to free up space.
- Avoid Hoarding: If you have an abundance of a certain ammo type for a weapon you rarely use, consider dropping some or using it more aggressively.
Early Game (Uptown & Downtown)
In the initial stages, your inventory will feel incredibly tight. Focus on acquiring essential weapons and key items for progression.
- Handgun & Ammo: Your starting weapon. Keep a decent stock of Handgun Ammo.
- Knife: A last resort, but always takes up one slot. Consider dropping it if you're confident in your ammo supply, though it can be useful for breaking open crates without expending bullets.
- Shotgun (Kendo's Gun Shop): A critical early acquisition. Ensure you have space for it and some Shotgun Shells.
- Lockpick: Essential for opening various doors and containers. Keep this on you until its uses are exhausted.
- Wrench (Subway Office): Needed to activate the train. Pick it up, use it, and then you can drop it.
- Fire Hose (Uptown Streets): Used to extinguish the fire. Once used, it's no longer needed.
- Power Cable (Subway Power Room): Required for the subway. Acquire, use, and discard.
Mid Game (Police Station & City Hall)
As you progress, more powerful weapons become available, and key items become more complex.
- Grenade Launcher & Rounds (Police Station): Found in the S.T.A.R.S. Office. This weapon is a game-changer, especially against Nemesis. Prioritize carrying Flame, Acid, and Freeze Rounds.
- Blue Gem, Green Gem, Red Gem (Various Locations): These are key items for solving puzzles. Only carry them when actively working on the associated puzzle. Once used, they are gone.
- Battery (City Hall): Needed for the clock tower. Pick it up when you're ready to proceed to that area.
- Fuse (City Hall): Another puzzle item. Use it and drop it.
Late Game (Clock Tower & Hospital)
By this point, you should have a strong arsenal. Focus on maintaining ammo for your preferred weapons and managing healing items.
- Magnum (Clock Tower): A powerful weapon for boss encounters. Conserve its limited ammo for Nemesis or other tough enemies.
- Healing Strategy: Aim to carry 2-3 healing items (First Aid Sprays or Mixed Herbs). If you have a full inventory and find more, use a less potent healing item if you've taken minor damage to make space, or strategically drop the new item in a safe room for later.
- Weapon Prioritization: Decide which weapons are most effective for the current area. For example, if facing many zombies, the Shotgun is efficient. For Nemesis, the Grenade Launcher and Magnum are preferred. Don't carry a weapon if you have no ammo for it.
Strategic Item Dropping
Since there are no item boxes, dropping items is your primary storage method. Choose safe, frequently visited locations.
- Safe Rooms: The best places to drop excess ammo, healing items, or puzzle items you don't immediately need. The first safe room in the game (the garage after the alleyway) is an excellent early drop-off point. The S.T.A.R.S. Office in the Police Station is another crucial hub.
- Key Item Drop-Offs: Once a key item has served its purpose (e.g., the Wrench after activating the train), immediately drop it to free up a slot.
- Ammo Caches: If you find a large quantity of ammo for a weapon you're not currently using, drop it near a safe room or a path you know you'll revisit. This allows you to pick it up later without cluttering your immediate inventory.
