Tips for Conserving Resources

Surviving Raccoon City requires more than just a steady aim; it demands shrewd resource management. Every bullet, every healing item, and every inventory slot is precious. Master these techniques to ensure you're always prepared for the next encounter, especially when Nemesis is on your tail.

Ammunition Conservation

  • Know Your Foe: Not every enemy requires a full clip.
    • Zombies: Often, a well-placed headshot or two with the Handgun is enough. If you're in a tight corridor and can't avoid them, consider knocking them down and running past. For groups, the Shotgun is efficient, but save it for critical situations.
    • Cerberus (Dogs): These can be tricky due to their speed. A single Handgun shot often stuns them, allowing you to run past. If you must engage, aim for quick kills to avoid taking damage.
    • Hunter Gammas: These amphibious creatures are best dealt with using the Shotgun. One or two direct blasts will usually put them down.
    • Drain Deimos: These giant fleas are quick but fragile. The Handgun is sufficient.
    • Nemesis: This is where your heavy ordnance comes in. Save Grenade Launcher rounds (especially Flame and Acid Rounds) and Magnum rounds for Nemesis encounters, particularly during boss fights. Sometimes, simply stunning him with a few Handgun shots and running is the best strategy to conserve ammo.
  • Melee Opportunities: When a zombie is knocked down, a well-timed stomp (Action button when standing over them) can finish them off without expending more ammo. This is particularly useful early in the game.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Fights: If an enemy isn't blocking a critical path or carrying a key item, consider simply running past them. Most enemies in Resident Evil 3 can be bypassed with careful movement.
  • Crafting Ammunition: The Reloading Tool is your best friend. Combine Gunpowder with the Reloading Tool to create various types of ammunition.
    • Gunpowder A + Reloading Tool: Handgun Ammo (15 rounds)
    • Gunpowder B + Reloading Tool: Shotgun Ammo (7 rounds)
    • Gunpowder C + Reloading Tool: Grenade Rounds (10 rounds)
    • Gunpowder A + Gunpowder A + Reloading Tool: Handgun Ammo (35 rounds)
    • Gunpowder B + Gunpowder B + Reloading Tool: Shotgun Ammo (18 rounds)
    • Gunpowder C + Gunpowder C + Reloading Tool: Grenade Rounds (20 rounds)
    • Gunpowder A + Gunpowder B + Reloading Tool: Magnum Ammo (6 rounds)
    • Gunpowder A + Gunpowder C + Reloading Tool: Flame Rounds (10 rounds)
    • Gunpowder B + Gunpowder C + Reloading Tool: Acid Rounds (10 rounds)
Prioritize crafting ammo for your most used weapons or for upcoming boss fights. Don't craft more than you immediately need, as Gunpowder takes up valuable inventory space.

Healing Item Management

  • Combine Herbs: Never use a single Green Herb unless absolutely necessary.
    • Green Herb + Green Herb: Restores more health than two separate Green Herbs.
    • Green Herb + Green Herb + Green Herb: Fully restores health.
    • Green Herb + Red Herb: Fully restores health. This is the most efficient combination.
    • Green Herb + Blue Herb: Cures poison.
    • Green Herb + Red Herb + Blue Herb: Fully restores health and cures poison.
  • First Aid Sprays: These are full heals and should be saved for critical situations, especially during Nemesis encounters or when you're low on herbs. They are often found in strategic locations before major boss fights.
  • Avoid Unnecessary Damage: The best way to conserve healing items is to not get hit in the first place. Learn enemy attack patterns and practice dodging.
  • Strategic Storage: Don't carry more healing items than you realistically need for the immediate area. Store excess herbs in Item Boxes to free up inventory space.

Inventory Space Optimization

  • Item Box Discipline: The Item Box is your sanctuary. Visit it frequently to deposit items you don't immediately need. This includes:
    • Excess ammunition for weapons you aren't currently using.
    • Key items that have served their purpose.
    • Too many healing items.
    • The Reloading Tool (unless you plan on crafting immediately).
  • Prioritize Weapons: Carry only the weapons essential for your current objective. Early on, the Handgun and perhaps the Shotgun are sufficient. As you progress, you'll acquire more powerful weapons, but don't feel obligated to carry them all at once.
  • Key Item Management: Once a key item has been used to unlock a door or solve a puzzle, check your inventory. If it's marked as "Used," you can safely discard it to free up a slot. Be careful not to discard items that might have multiple uses!
  • The Power of the Side Pack: Look out for Side Packs! These invaluable items permanently increase Jill's inventory capacity by two slots. There are several throughout the game:
    • Uptown: Inside the small office in the alleyway near the beginning of the game, past the burning barrel.
    • Raccoon City Police Department: In the S.T.A.R.S. Office, on the desk.
    • Clock Tower: In the main hall, near the entrance to the chapel.
    • Hospital: In the basement, within the morgue area.
Prioritize collecting these as soon as possible.

By diligently applying these resource conservation tactics, you'll find yourself much better equipped to face the horrors of Raccoon City and, more importantly, survive Nemesis's relentless pursuit.
