Safe Room Locations
Safe rooms are your sanctuaries in the nightmare that is Raccoon City. These designated areas offer a brief respite from the relentless pursuit of Nemesis and the hordes of infected. Here, you can save your progress using the trusty Typewriter, organize your inventory with the Item Box, and often find crucial supplies. Understanding their locations and strategic use is paramount for survival.
Raccoon City Streets - Uptown
- Subway Car (Beginning): Your very first safe haven. After the initial chaos and escaping the alley, you'll find yourself inside a relatively intact subway car.
- Location: Directly accessible after the opening sequence and your first encounter with Nemesis.
- Items of Note: Check the seats and floor for various handgun ammo, a First Aid Spray, and potentially a Green Herb. The Item Box and Typewriter are immediately visible upon entering.
- Strategy: This is your primary hub for the early game. Plan your excursions into the streets carefully, always aiming to return here to offload unnecessary items and save.
- Sales Office: A small, somewhat hidden office space offering temporary safety.
- Location: From the main street area (after the initial subway car), head towards the "Sales Office" sign. You'll need to navigate past a few zombies.
- Items of Note: Often contains a few rounds of Handgun Ammo and sometimes a Green Herb. The Item Box and Typewriter are present.
- Strategy: Useful for a quick save or inventory shuffle when exploring the immediate vicinity, especially before venturing further into the downtown area.
Raccoon City Streets - Downtown
- Raccoon Police Department (RPD) - Main Hall: While not a traditional "safe room" in the strictest sense (enemies can appear here later), the main hall of the RPD offers an Item Box and Typewriter, making it a critical hub.
- Location: Accessible after solving the Water Sample puzzle and gaining entry to the RPD.
- Items of Note: The main hall itself usually has no immediate items, but the surrounding offices (like the West Office) contain various crucial items. The Item Box is near the front desk, and the Typewriter is typically on the desk itself.
- Strategy: Treat this as a temporary base of operations while exploring the RPD. Be aware that Nemesis can breach the RPD, so don't linger unnecessarily.
- Raccoon Police Department (RPD) - Darkroom: A true safe room within the RPD, offering complete safety.
- Location: From the Main Hall, head through the West Office, then proceed to the hallway leading to the Darkroom.
- Items of Note: Often contains Film, which can be developed for clues, and sometimes a few rounds of Handgun Ammo. This room has both an Item Box and a Typewriter.
- Strategy: This is your safest bet for saving and organizing within the RPD. Use it frequently, especially after significant progress or tough encounters.
Clock Tower
- Clock Tower Chapel: A large, ornate room that serves as a major safe zone before and after key events.
- Location: After navigating the streets and entering the Clock Tower complex, the Chapel is one of the first major rooms you'll encounter.
- Items of Note: This room is often rich with supplies, including various types of ammo (Shotgun Shells, Grenade Rounds), First Aid Sprays, and sometimes even weapon parts. The Item Box and Typewriter are prominently displayed.
- Strategy: This is a critical safe room. You'll be returning here multiple times to prepare for encounters, especially the boss fight with Nemesis on the Clock Tower balcony. Stock up on healing items and powerful ammunition here.
Hospital
- Hospital Save Room: A small, unassuming room providing much-needed relief within the infected hospital.
- Location: Typically found on one of the upper floors of the hospital, often near the Nurses' Station or a patient ward. You'll need to explore a bit to locate it.
- Items of Note: Usually contains a Green Herb or two, and sometimes a few Handgun Rounds. The Item Box and Typewriter are present.
- Strategy: The hospital is a maze of dangers. Use this safe room to save frequently, especially after dealing with the Hunter Gamma creatures or solving puzzles. It's a vital checkpoint before facing the more challenging sections of the facility.
