Save Points & Strategy
In Resident Evil 3: Nemesis, effective use of save points and strategic item management are paramount to survival. Unlike some other entries in the series, Nemesis's constant threat means you can't always backtrack safely. Knowing when and where to save, and what to keep in your limited inventory, will make all the difference.
Understanding Save Points
Save points in RE3 are represented by the iconic Typewriter. To save your progress, you'll need an Ink Ribbon. These are finite resources, so use them wisely. Each save consumes one Ink Ribbon. You'll typically find a few Ink Ribbons near each Typewriter, but don't get complacent – they run out.
Key Save Point Locations & Considerations:
- Raccoon City Police Station (R.P.D.) Main Hall: This is your first major safe haven. After escaping the initial downtown chaos, you'll find a Typewriter and an Item Box here. This is a critical hub early on.
- Strategy: Save here after every significant objective completed within the R.P.D. or after a particularly tough encounter. Use the Item Box to store excess ammunition, healing items, and puzzle items you don't immediately need.
- Sales Office (Downtown): Located near the start of the game, after the initial street encounters. It offers a Typewriter and an Item Box.
- Strategy: This is a good spot to save after your first few encounters with Nemesis or after securing the Fire Hose. Don't linger too long, as Nemesis can appear in this area.
- Subway Office: Found within the subway system, this room provides a Typewriter and an Item Box.
- Strategy: A crucial save point before venturing deeper into the subway tunnels or facing any potential boss encounters within this section. Ensure you've organized your inventory here, as the subway can be a maze of enemies.
- Clock Tower Chapel: Inside the Clock Tower, this room offers a Typewriter and an Item Box.
- Strategy: This is your last safe point before the major boss fight with Nemesis on the Clock Tower balcony. Make sure you have ample healing, powerful weapons (Shotgun, Grenade Launcher), and a full stock of ammunition. Consider saving multiple times on different slots if you're struggling with the boss.
- Hospital Basement (Storage Room): After navigating the hospital, you'll find a Typewriter and an Item Box in a small storage room.
- Strategy: This is a vital save point before the hospital's more dangerous sections and the subsequent encounters with Nemesis. Stock up on healing items, as the hospital can be quite challenging with Hunters and Drain Deimos.
- Dead Factory (Control Room): Towards the end of the game, the control room in the Dead Factory provides a Typewriter and an Item Box.
- Strategy: This is essentially your final save point before the game's climax. Ensure you have your absolute best weapons, a plethora of healing items, and any remaining special ammunition. This is where you prepare for the final gauntlet.
Inventory Management & Item Box Strategy
The Item Box is your best friend. It allows you to store items you don't currently need, freeing up precious inventory slots. Remember, Item Boxes are linked, meaning you can access your stored items from any Item Box in the game.
- Prioritize Combat Essentials: Always carry your primary weapon, a secondary weapon (e.g., Knife for emergencies or breaking crates), and enough ammunition for immediate threats.
- Healing First: Keep at least one healing item (First Aid Spray or Mixed Herbs) on hand at all times. Store excess healing in the Item Box.
- Puzzle Items: Pick up puzzle items as you find them, but if they're not immediately usable in your current area, store them. There's no point carrying the "Bronze Book" through a zombie-infested street if its use is in the R.P.D. library.
- Combine Wisely: Combine gunpowder to create ammunition or herbs to create stronger healing items when you have the space or need. Don't hoard individual gunpowder types if you can combine them into something useful.
- Empty Inventory Before Bosses: Before a known boss fight, try to have as few non-essential items as possible in your inventory. This allows you to pick up any dropped items or critical ammunition during the fight.
General Saving Strategies
- Save After Major Progress: Always save after completing a significant objective, solving a complex puzzle, or defeating a challenging enemy.
- Save Before Unknown Areas: If you're about to enter a new, unexplored area, especially one that looks ominous, consider saving. This prevents you from losing significant progress if you encounter an unexpected threat.
- Multiple Save Slots: Utilize multiple save slots. This is crucial in Resident Evil 3. If you make a mistake (e.g., waste too much ammo, get critically injured, or get stuck in a bad Nemesis encounter), you can revert to an earlier save without restarting the entire game. Aim for at least 2-3 rotating save slots.
- Don't Over-Save: While saving is important, don't waste Ink Ribbons by saving every five minutes. Balance your saves with the availability of Ink Ribbons and the risk of the current situation.
- Nemesis Encounters: If you're about to trigger a Nemesis encounter (often signaled by a "Danger" choice or a specific area), consider saving beforehand. This allows you to retry the encounter if you take too much damage or want to try a different strategy (fight or flee).
