Understanding and using environmental hazards and traps is crucial for survival, especially when conserving precious ammunition or dealing with overwhelming odds. This section details common environmental dangers and how to either avoid them or turn them to your advantage.

Explosive Barrels & Generators

These volatile objects are your best friends in a tight spot. They are strategically placed throughout the city and can clear out groups of enemies or severely damage larger threats like the Nemesis.

• Red Barrels: These are the most common explosive hazard.
  • Location: Found frequently in the Downtown area, particularly in alleyways, construction sites, and near street corners. Also present in the Police Station exterior and the Subway Power Substation.
  • Strategy: Shoot a red barrel when multiple zombies are clustered near it. The resulting explosion will often kill them outright or leave them severely wounded, allowing for easy follow-up shots. For Nemesis encounters, lure him close to a barrel and detonate it for significant damage and a temporary stun.
  • Actionable Tip: Always survey an area for red barrels before engaging enemies. Plan your retreat routes to pass by these barrels if you anticipate a chase.
• Electrical Generators: Less common than barrels but equally effective, these generators emit a powerful electrical shock when destroyed.
  • Location: Notable generators are found in the Downtown area, particularly near the alley leading to the Subway Office, and within the Police Station's exterior courtyard.
  • Strategy: Similar to red barrels, shoot these generators when enemies are in close proximity. The electrical discharge will stun and damage anything in its radius, making them vulnerable. This is particularly effective against Hunters and the Nemesis, providing a valuable window for attack or escape.
  • Actionable Tip: The stun from a generator is longer than a barrel's explosion. Use this time to land critical headshots or reposition yourself.

Damaged Infrastructure & Falling Debris

Raccoon City is falling apart, and you'll often find yourself navigating precarious environments. Be aware of your surroundings to avoid taking unnecessary damage.

• Falling Rubble:
  • Location: Common in areas affected by explosions or structural damage, such as the initial Downtown streets and the collapsed sections of the Police Station.
  • Strategy: Look for visual cues like crumbling ceilings, shaking ground, or dust falling from above. These often precede a collapse. If you see these signs, sprint through the area or find cover immediately.
  • Actionable Tip: Some falling debris can be triggered by Nemesis's attacks. Use his aggression to your advantage by luring him under unstable structures, potentially damaging him or creating new pathways.
• Broken Glass & Sharp Objects:
  • Location: Scattered throughout various interiors, especially in shops, offices, and the hospital.
  • Strategy: While not directly lethal, stepping on broken glass can cause a brief stumble animation, leaving you vulnerable to enemy attacks. Always try to navigate around obvious piles of glass.
  • Actionable Tip: The stumble is minor, but in a crowded room, it can be fatal. Prioritize smooth movement.

Environmental Obstacles & Chokepoints

The urban environment is full of natural barriers and narrow passages that can be both a blessing and a curse.

• Narrow Corridors & Doorways:
  • Strategy: These are excellent chokepoints for dealing with groups of zombies. Line them up and use a shotgun or grenade to take out multiple targets with one shot. However, be wary of Nemesis in these areas, as his powerful attacks can quickly corner and overwhelm you.
  • Actionable Tip: If Nemesis is pursuing you, use narrow passages to your advantage by running past him and forcing him to break through, buying you precious seconds.
• Flammable Spills:
  • Location: Occasionally found in industrial areas or garages, such as the Garage in Downtown.
  • Strategy: If you see a puddle of oil or other flammable liquid, shoot it when enemies are standing in it. This will ignite the spill, setting enemies on fire and causing continuous damage. This is particularly effective against groups of zombies.
  • Actionable Tip: The fire effect lasts for a short duration, so try to keep enemies in the flames for as long as possible.
