6.1. Ganados (Villagers) & Variants

The Ganados, the infected inhabitants of the remote Spanish village, are your primary adversaries for much of Resident Evil 4 (Remake). These once-normal villagers have been taken over by the Las Plagas parasite, transforming them into aggressive, relentless, and often terrifying foes. Understanding their behavior, strengths, and weaknesses is crucial for survival.

The standard Ganado is the most common enemy type. They typically wield melee weapons like pitchforks, axes, or knives, and some may carry rudimentary firearms such as pistols or shotguns. Their attack patterns are often frenzied and uncoordinated, but they can overwhelm Leon through sheer numbers. Aiming for the head is your most effective tactic, as it can stagger them, allowing for a follow-up melee attack or a critical shot. Be wary of their lunging attacks and their ability to grab Leon.

Several variants of the Ganado exist, each presenting unique challenges:

  • Shield Ganados: These enemies carry wooden shields, making frontal assaults difficult. Their weak point is often their exposed legs or head when they attack. A well-placed grenade or a shot to their legs can often disarm them.
  • Chainsaw Ganados: The dreaded Dr. Salvador and his brethren. These enemies are incredibly dangerous, capable of instantly killing Leon with their revving chainsaws. They are slow but relentless. Prioritize eliminating them from a distance with powerful weapons like the shotgun or rifle. Flashbangs can stun them, providing a brief window for escape or attack.
  • Dynamite Ganados: These Ganados throw dynamite sticks, creating hazardous explosive zones. Keep your distance and try to shoot the dynamite before it detonates, or lure them into other explosive hazards.
  • Armored Ganados: Some Ganados wear heavy armor, making them resistant to frontal attacks. You'll need to flank them or target their exposed limbs or heads.

The Las Plagas parasite itself can manifest in various ways. When a Ganado is severely damaged, or sometimes upon death, the Plaga can burst from their bodies, often in the form of tentacles or a grotesque head. These Plaga forms are highly aggressive and can attack with venomous bites or projectiles. It's often best to finish off weakened Ganados quickly to prevent the Plaga from fully emerging, or to deal with the emergent Plaga swiftly.

Combat Strategies for Ganados:

  1. Prioritize Headshots: Stagger enemies for melee finishers.
  2. Crowd Control: Use shotguns, grenades, and flashbangs for groups.
  3. Target Weaknesses: Aim for exposed Plaga or legs of shielded enemies.
  4. Environmental Hazards: use explosive barrels and traps.
  5. Chainsaw Awareness: Immediately focus on Chainsaw Ganados with powerful weapons.

Observing enemy behavior is key. Some Ganados will attempt to flank you, while others will charge headlong. Learning their tells and adapting your strategy on the fly will significantly increase your survival rate. Don't underestimate the power of the knife for conserving ammo on weakened or staggered enemies.
