Introduction & Game Mechanics

Welcome, survivor, to Raccoon City! Resident Evil Outbreak throws you into the heart of the T-Virus pandemic, not as a lone hero, but as one of eight ordinary citizens struggling to escape. This guide will equip you with the fundamental knowledge and strategies needed to navigate the horrors ahead, whether you're playing solo with AI companions or, in its original glory, online with friends.

The Core Loop: Survive and Escape

Unlike traditional Resident Evil titles, Outbreak emphasizes teamwork, resource management, and a constant race against time. Your primary objective in each scenario is to escape before the T-Virus fully infects your character. The infection rate, displayed as a percentage, steadily increases throughout the game. Once it hits 100%, it's game over for that character.

Character Selection & Unique Abilities

Choosing the right character for a scenario can significantly impact your success. Each of the eight playable characters possesses unique abilities and starting items:

  • Kevin Ryman: RPD Officer. Starts with a .45 Automatic and has a strong attack. Ideal for direct combat.
  • Mark Wilkins: Security Guard. Starts with a Handgun and can guard/shove enemies. Excellent for tanking hits and protecting allies.
  • Cindy Lennox: Waitress. Starts with a First Aid Spray and can carry more healing items. Her unique skill allows her to heal others more effectively.
  • George Hamilton: Doctor. Starts with a Medical Set and can create various healing concoctions. Invaluable for sustained survival.
  • Alyssa Ashcroft: Reporter. Starts with a Lockpick and has a quick dodge. Her lockpick is essential for accessing certain areas and items.
  • Yoko Suzuki: University Student. Starts with a Backpack, allowing for significantly increased inventory space. Crucial for item hoarding and team support.
  • David King: Plumber. Starts with a Knife and a Toolkit. Can repair broken weapons and craft new ones. A versatile character for offense and utility.
  • Jim Chapman: Subway Employee. Starts with a Coin and has a "Lucky" ability that sometimes grants extra items. Can play dead to avoid detection.

Understanding Your Inventory & Item Management

Inventory space is extremely limited, typically holding only 4 items (Yoko's Backpack expands this to 8). This forces strategic decisions about what to carry. Here's how to manage your precious resources:

  • Combining Items: Many items can be combined to create more potent versions. For example, a Green Herb and a Red Herb combine into a powerful healing item. George's Medical Set is particularly adept at this.
  • Dropping Items: You can drop items to free up space or to share with teammates. Remember their location, as they'll remain on the ground.
  • Item Boxes: Unlike other Resident Evil games, there are NO magic item boxes that link across areas. Any item you drop or leave behind will stay exactly where you left it. Plan your routes and item drops carefully.

Combat & Evasion

Direct confrontation is often costly in terms of ammunition and health. Consider these strategies:

  • Melee Attacks: All characters have a basic melee attack. While weak, it can be used to conserve ammo on weaker enemies or to push them away.
  • Headshots: Aiming for the head with firearms deals significantly more damage. Practice your aim!
  • Evasion: Sometimes, the best fight is no fight. Learn enemy patterns and use tight spaces or character-specific dodges (like Alyssa's) to avoid damage and conserve resources.
  • Cooperative Combat: With AI or human partners, try to flank enemies or have one character draw aggro while another attacks.

The T-Virus Infection & Curing

The T-Virus is your constant enemy. Getting hit by zombies or other infected creatures will increase your infection rate. If it reaches 100%, your character dies.

  • Antivirals: These are rare but crucial items that reduce your infection rate. Always prioritize finding and using them, especially if your infection is high.
  • Healing Items: While healing items restore health, they do NOT reduce infection. Keep this distinction in mind.
  • George's Medical Set: George can craft various Antivirals and healing items, making him a vital asset for long-term survival.

Communication (Even Offline)

Even when playing offline with AI, communication is key. Use the in-game commands to direct your AI partners:

  • "Help!": Calls for assistance from nearby teammates.
  • "Go!": Directs a teammate to move to a specific location or interact with an object.
  • "Come On!": Calls teammates to follow you.
  • "Thanks!": A polite acknowledgment.

Effective use of these commands can prevent AI from wandering into danger or wasting valuable resources.
