Status Effects & Cures

Navigating the horrors of Raccoon City requires more than just a steady aim; you'll need to understand and effectively manage the various debilitating status effects that can plague your character. Ignoring these conditions can quickly lead to a game over, so mastering their cures and prevention is paramount. This section details each status effect, its symptoms, and the most effective ways to treat it.

Poison

Poison is a common and dangerous ailment that slowly drains your character's health over time. The longer you remain poisoned, the more health you lose, making immediate treatment crucial.

  • Symptoms: Your character's health bar will turn purple, and they will periodically cough or groan, indicating a steady health drain.
  • Causes:
    • Attacks from certain enemies, such as the Giant Moth in "The Hive" scenario, or the various insect enemies found throughout the game.
    • Contact with poisonous gas, often found in specific areas or triggered by environmental hazards.
  • Cures:
    • Blue Herb: The most common and direct cure. Consuming a Blue Herb will instantly neutralize the poison. These can be found in various locations across all scenarios. For example, in "Outbreak," a Blue Herb is often located near the entrance to the Main Hall of the hospital.
    • Mixed Herb (G+B): Combining a Green Herb with a Blue Herb not only cures poison but also restores a significant amount of health. This is an excellent option if you're poisoned and also low on health.
    • Mixed Herb (G+G+B): For maximum healing and poison cure, this combination is the best.
    • Antidote: A dedicated anti-poison medication. While less common than Blue Herbs, Antidotes are equally effective. Keep an eye out for them in medical facilities or supply rooms.
  • Strategy: Always try to carry at least one Blue Herb or a Mixed Herb (G+B) if you anticipate encountering poisonous enemies. If a teammate is poisoned, offer them a Blue Herb if you have one, or guide them to one.

Virus

The T-Virus is the ultimate threat in Resident Evil Outbreak. Infection is a ticking clock, slowly transforming your character into a zombie. This is the most critical status effect to manage.

  • Symptoms: A "Virus Gauge" will appear on your screen, indicating the progression of the infection. As the gauge fills, your character will show increasing signs of illness, such as coughing, stumbling, and eventually, a full transformation into a zombie, leading to a game over.
  • Causes:
    • Any attack from a zombie or other T-Virus infected creature. This includes bites, scratches, and even some projectile attacks.
    • Environmental hazards, such as contact with infected blood or bodily fluids.
  • Cures:
    • Antivirus: The only item that can reduce the Virus Gauge. Antivirus is extremely rare and should be used strategically. You might find one in a secure lab or a hidden area. For instance, in "Below Freezing Point," an Antivirus can sometimes be found in the B4F Laboratory.
    • Vaccine: A specialized item that completely halts the progression of the virus, effectively curing it. Vaccines are even rarer than Antivirus and are often scenario-specific objectives. In "The Hive," a Vaccine is a key item needed to progress and save your character.
  • Strategy: Preventing infection is always better than curing it. Avoid getting hit by zombies at all costs. If you are infected, prioritize finding Antivirus or a Vaccine. Communicate with your team if you have an Antivirus, as it can be shared. Remember, once the Virus Gauge reaches 100%, it's game over for that character.

Bleeding

Bleeding causes a continuous, albeit slower, drain on your character's health compared to poison. It's less immediately life-threatening but can still lead to a quick demise if left untreated.

  • Symptoms: A small blood drop icon will appear near your health bar, and your character will leave a trail of blood as they move.
  • Causes:
    • Attacks from enemies with sharp claws or weapons, such as Lickers or certain zombie types.
    • Falling from significant heights or taking damage from environmental traps.
  • Cures:
    • Bandage: The primary item for stopping bleeding. Using a Bandage will immediately cease the health drain. Bandages are fairly common and can be found in most scenarios, often in first-aid kits or medical cabinets.
    • First Aid Spray: While primarily a healing item, First Aid Spray will also stop bleeding. If you're bleeding and low on health, this is a good all-in-one solution.
  • Strategy: If you start bleeding, try to find a safe spot to apply a Bandage as soon as possible. Don't waste a First Aid Spray if you only need to stop bleeding and have plenty of health; save it for more critical situations.

Confusion

Confusion is a disorienting status effect that can make combat and navigation incredibly difficult.

  • Symptoms: Your character's movement controls will be inverted or become erratic, making it hard to move in the intended direction. The screen may also blur slightly.
  • Causes:
    • Attacks from specific enemies, such as the Suspended in "The Hive" scenario, which can emit a disorienting gas.
    • Exposure to certain hallucinogenic gases or environmental effects.
  • Cures:
    • Stimulant: A dedicated item designed to cure confusion. Using a Stimulant will immediately restore normal controls. Stimulants are less common than Bandages but can be found in medical areas.
    • First Aid Spray: Similar to bleeding, First Aid Spray will also cure confusion in addition to healing.
  • Strategy: If confused, try to move to a safe area away from enemies before attempting to use an item. If you're in a critical combat situation, a First Aid Spray might be your best bet to quickly regain control and heal.

Burnt

Being burnt is a severe status effect that causes rapid health loss and can leave your character vulnerable.

  • Symptoms: Your character will be engulfed in flames, rapidly losing health. They will also be temporarily stunned and unable to act.
  • Causes:
    • Explosions from gas tanks or other volatile objects.
    • Attacks from enemies that use fire, such as certain mutated creatures or environmental fire hazards.
  • Cures:
    • Water Bottle: The most direct and effective cure. Using a Water Bottle will extinguish the flames and stop the health drain. These can sometimes be found in kitchens or utility rooms.
    • First Aid Spray: While it won't extinguish the flames, a First Aid Spray can mitigate the health loss and heal some damage once the burning stops naturally or through other means.
  • Strategy: If you catch fire, immediately try to use a Water Bottle. If you don't have one, try to move away from the source of fire and hope the flames subside quickly, then use a healing item. Avoid areas with explosive barrels or fire-wielding enemies if you're low on health or don't have a Water Bottle.

Darkness

While not a direct health-draining status, Darkness significantly impairs your visibility and can lead to other status effects if you're not careful.

  • Symptoms: The screen will become almost completely black, making it extremely difficult to see enemies, items, or navigate the environment.
  • Causes:
    • Environmental factors, such as power outages or specific areas designed to be dark.
    • Attacks from certain enemies that can temporarily blind you.
  • Cures:
    • Flashlight: Equipping and activating a Flashlight will illuminate your immediate surroundings, dispelling the darkness. Flashlights are often found in utility closets or security rooms.
    • Lighter: While not as effective as a Flashlight, a Lighter can provide a small amount of light, enough to navigate very slowly or find a Flashlight.
  • Strategy: Always be on the lookout for Flashlights, especially in scenarios known for dark areas. If you find yourself in darkness without a light source, move extremely cautiously, relying on sound cues to detect enemies.
