Weapon Upgrade System
While Resident Evil Outbreak doesn't feature a traditional weapon upgrade system where you spend currency or resources to enhance stats, it does offer several key ways to improve your offensive capabilities through weapon combinations and special items. Mastering these "upgrades" is crucial for survival, especially on higher difficulties or when playing with less experienced teammates. Think of these not as permanent enhancements, but as tactical modifications that provide temporary or situational advantages.
Combining Weapons for Enhanced Firepower
Certain weapons can be combined with specific items to create more powerful variants. These combinations are often straightforward but require you to find both components.
- Handgun + Handgun Parts = Enhanced Handgun
- Effect: Increases the Handgun's damage output significantly, making it more reliable against standard zombies and even some weaker mutants.
- Parts Location: Handgun Parts are typically found in various scenarios, often in less obvious locations. For example, in "Outbreak," you can find them in the Bar's back room or the Police Station's locker room. In "Below Freezing Point," look in the laboratory areas.
- Strategy: Always prioritize finding Handgun Parts if you plan on relying on the Handgun for consistent damage. The enhanced version conserves precious ammunition by taking down enemies faster.
- Shotgun + Shotgun Parts = Enhanced Shotgun
- Effect: Boosts the Shotgun's already impressive damage and spread, making it devastating at close range. It can often one-shot standard zombies and severely cripple stronger foes.
- Parts Location: Shotgun Parts are rarer than Handgun Parts. In "The Hive," they can be found in the hospital's staff room. In "Decisions, Decisions," check the university's research labs.
- Strategy: The Enhanced Shotgun is a boss-killer. Save its ammunition for critical encounters or when you're overwhelmed by a group of enemies. It's a high-risk, high-reward weapon due to its limited ammo capacity.
Special Ammunition Types
Beyond combining weapons, certain scenarios offer unique ammunition types that function as temporary "upgrades" by altering weapon performance or providing special effects.
- Acid Rounds (Grenade Launcher)
- Effect: Deals continuous damage over time to enemies, particularly effective against creatures with tough hides or those that are resistant to conventional bullets.
- Location: Primarily found in scenarios like "The Hive" or "Decisions, Decisions," often near the Grenade Launcher itself or in secure storage areas.
- Strategy: Use Acid Rounds against regenerating enemies or bosses that have high health. The lingering damage can help you conserve other valuable ammunition.
- Flame Rounds (Grenade Launcher)
- Effect: Inflicts fire damage, excellent for stunning enemies and dealing damage to organic targets. Particularly useful against plant-based creatures or swarms of smaller foes.
- Location: Similar to Acid Rounds, these are found in specific scenarios where the Grenade Launcher is present, such as "Underbelly" or "The Hive."
- Strategy: Flame Rounds are great for crowd control or for quickly dispatching groups of weaker enemies. They can also be used to create temporary safe zones by setting areas ablaze.
- Explosive Rounds (Grenade Launcher)
- Effect: Standard high-damage explosive rounds, ideal for raw damage output against any enemy.
- Location: Most common Grenade Launcher ammunition, found in almost any scenario where the Grenade Launcher appears.
- Strategy: Your go-to for general heavy damage. Don't be afraid to use them against tough enemies, but always consider if Acid or Flame Rounds might be more efficient for specific threats.
Character-Specific Advantages
While not a direct upgrade system, certain characters possess innate abilities or starting weapons that can be considered "upgraded" in their own right, providing a tactical advantage.
- Kevin Ryman: .45 Automatic
- Advantage: Kevin starts with the powerful .45 Automatic, which boasts higher damage per shot than the standard Handgun. This gives him a significant early-game advantage in combat.
- Strategy: As Kevin, you can conserve your .45 ammo for tougher encounters and rely on finding standard Handguns for general use, or even combine a standard Handgun with parts to have two strong pistols.
- Mark Wilkins: Assault Rifle
- Advantage: Mark can wield the Assault Rifle with greater proficiency, often starting with one or finding it more readily available in certain scenarios. Its high rate of fire and decent damage make it a formidable weapon.
- Strategy: If playing as Mark, prioritize finding Assault Rifle ammunition. This weapon excels at sustained damage against bosses or clearing out large groups of enemies quickly.
General Tips for Maximizing Weapon Effectiveness
- Inventory Management: Space is extremely limited. Always consider if carrying weapon parts or special ammo is worth the inventory slot, especially if you haven't found the base weapon yet.
- Communication (Online Play): If playing online, communicate with your team about who needs which weapon parts or special ammo. A well-equipped team is a surviving team.
- Scenario Knowledge: Learn the fixed locations of weapon parts and special ammunition in each scenario. This allows for efficient item retrieval and strategic planning.
- Conserve Ammunition: Even with upgraded weapons, ammunition is scarce. Aim for headshots on zombies and prioritize critical hits on stronger enemies to maximize damage and conserve rounds.
