Navigate Raccoon City Streets
Welcome to the treacherous streets of Raccoon City, a gauntlet of undead horrors and dwindling resources. Your primary objective in this initial street section is to reach the sanctuary (or what's left of it) of the Raccoon Police Department (RPD). This guide will meticulously detail every step, item, and enemy encounter to ensure your survival.
Recommended Character Loadouts & Strategies:
- Kevin Ryman: His .45 Automatic is invaluable for headshots and quickly dispatching zombies. Conserve ammo for Lickers and larger groups. His personal item, the Handgun Magazine, is crucial for extended engagements.
- Mark Wilkins: His Military Fork offers decent melee damage, but his true strength lies in his ability to guard, reducing damage. Use him to draw aggro while teammates attack.
- Cindy Lennox: Her Herb Case allows her to carry more healing items. Focus on supporting the team with healing and using her dodge to avoid damage. She can also apply herbs to teammates, a vital skill.
- George Hamilton: His Medical Set can create powerful healing items. Prioritize finding chemicals to craft stronger antidotes or recovery items. His melee attack is weak, so keep him protected.
- Alyssa Ashcroft: Her Lockpick is essential for opening locked desks and doors, potentially yielding extra ammo or healing items. Her Handgun is standard, but her critical hit rate can be surprisingly effective.
- Yoko Suzuki: Her spacious inventory (8 slots + personal item) makes her an excellent item mule. Keep her stocked with crucial supplies. Her melee attack is very weak, avoid combat if possible.
- Jim Chapman: His Coin allows him to play dead, avoiding damage and conserving resources. His personal item, the Lucky Coin, can increase item drop rates. His melee attack is average.
- David King: His Tool Box allows him to craft makeshift weapons (like the Iron Pipe) and repair damaged items. His Knife is a reliable, infinite-use melee weapon, perfect for conserving handgun ammo on single zombies.
Initial Street Encounter: Apple Inn Area
Upon exiting the Apple Inn, you'll find yourself on a debris-strewn street. Immediately be on guard, as several zombies will shamble towards you.
- Clear the Immediate Area: Two to three zombies will be directly in front of the Apple Inn entrance. Use headshots with handguns or a strong melee weapon (like David's Knife or Mark's Military Fork) to conserve ammo.
- Check the Apple Inn Lobby (Optional but Recommended): Briefly re-enter the Apple Inn lobby.
- Item: Green Herb (x1) - Often found on the counter or near the entrance.
- Item: Handgun Ammo (x10-15) - Sometimes found in a drawer behind the counter (requires Alyssa's Lockpick or a keycard if available in this scenario).
- Proceed Down the Street: Head east down the main street. You'll encounter more scattered zombies. Prioritize headshots to save ammunition.
- Locate the Construction Site: As you move further, you'll see a small construction area on your left (north side of the street).
- Item: Iron Pipe (x1) - This crucial melee weapon is typically found leaning against the scaffolding or a pile of debris within this construction zone. It's an excellent early-game weapon, especially for characters without strong personal melee items.
- Enemy: Be wary of 1-2 additional zombies lurking near the construction materials.
Side Alleys and Item Scavenging
Raccoon City's side alleys are often overlooked but can yield vital supplies. Always take a moment to explore them, especially if you're low on health or ammo.
- First Alley (North Side): Shortly after the construction site, there's a narrow alleyway leading north.
- Item: Green Herb (x1) - Commonly found near trash cans or discarded boxes.
- Item: Handgun Ammo (x10) - Occasionally spawns in a hidden corner.
- Enemy: A single zombie might be slumped against a wall, often playing dead. Approach with caution.
- Second Alley (South Side): Further down the main street, opposite a small cafe, you'll find another alley.
- Item: First Aid Spray (x1) - A rare but welcome find, often in a crate or behind a dumpster.
- Item: Chemical Bottle (x1) - If George is in your party, this is invaluable for crafting.
- Enemy: Expect 1-2 zombies, sometimes including a crawling zombie that can be hard to spot.
The Locked Gate and the Gate Key
Your progress will be halted by a sturdy metal gate, blocking the path to the next section of the street leading towards the RPD.
- Locate the Gate: The gate is unmistakable, usually adorned with police tape or warning signs.
- Search for the Gate Key: The Gate Key is a critical item. Its location can vary slightly but is typically found in one of two places:
- Fallen Civilian: Often, a civilian corpse near the gate or in a small alcove just before it will be clutching the key. Examine all bodies thoroughly.
- Dumpster/Trash Can: Check large dumpsters or overflowing trash cans in the immediate vicinity of the gate. Sometimes the key is hidden within.
- Small Shop/Cafe Entrance: Occasionally, the key might be found on the ground just inside the entrance of a small, accessible shop or cafe near the gate.
- Open the Gate: Once the key is acquired, use it on the gate to proceed. Be prepared, as the area beyond often introduces new threats.
Licker Encounters and Advanced Strategies
Beyond the first locked gate, the environment becomes more dangerous, with the introduction of Lickers – blind, agile, and deadly creatures.
Licker Strategy:
- Silence is Key: Lickers are blind but have acute hearing. Walking (not running) will allow you to bypass them if they are not alerted.
- Target the Brain: Their exposed brain is their weak point. A well-aimed handgun shot or a powerful shotgun blast to the head can stagger or even kill them quickly.
- Shotgun/Magnum: If you have a shotgun or magnum, this is the time to use it. One or two well-placed shots can take down a Licker.
- Melee Caution: Melee attacks are risky against Lickers due to their speed and tongue attacks. Only use melee if you have no other option or if the Licker is stunned. David's Knife can be effective if you're skilled at dodging.
- Teamwork: Have one character draw its attention while another flanks and attacks. Cindy's dodge can be useful for this.
- Avoidance: If you're low on resources, sometimes the best strategy is to simply avoid them by walking slowly and giving them a wide berth.
Specific Licker Placements:
- Alleyway Ambush: After the first gate, a narrow alleyway often contains 1-2 Lickers. Move slowly and listen for their distinctive skittering sound.
- Overturned Bus Area: A section with an overturned bus or car wreck is a common Licker haunt. They may drop from above or emerge from behind obstacles.
- Near the RPD Entrance: Expect at least one Licker guarding the final approach to the RPD. This is often a critical encounter, so save some heavy ammo.
Final Approach to the RPD
The last stretch of street before the RPD entrance is usually heavily populated with zombies and potentially another Licker.
- Clear the Path: Several zombies will be between you and the RPD gates. Use any remaining handgun ammo or strong melee attacks.
- Check for Final Items: Look for any last-minute items near barricades or police vehicles.
- Item: Handgun Ammo (x10-15) - Often found in police cars or on the ground.
- Item: Green Herb (x1) - Sometimes near the RPD entrance.
- Enter the RPD: Once the path is clear, approach the main entrance of the RPD to trigger the next section of the scenario.
Common Pitfalls & Tips:
- Don't Waste Ammo: Headshots are paramount for zombies. Save powerful rounds for Lickers and other special infected.
- Conserve Healing Items: Only use First Aid Sprays or multiple herbs when absolutely necessary. A single Green Herb can often suffice for minor damage.
- Use Your Map: The map is invaluable for identifying your location and the general direction of the RPD.
- Check Every Corner: Items are often hidden in plain sight or in small, easily missed nooks.
- Listen Carefully: The audio cues for Lickers (skittering, heavy breathing) are distinct and can give you a crucial head start.
- Teamwork is Essential: If playing with AI, try to guide them to pick up items or engage specific enemies. If with human players, coordinate your attacks and item usage.
By following this detailed guide, you should be able to navigate the perilous streets of Raccoon City and reach the RPD with your team and resources largely intact.
