General Survival Strategies
Surviving the Raccoon City outbreak requires more than just a steady aim; it demands careful resource management, strategic movement, and an understanding of the unique challenges presented by the T-Virus. This section will equip you with essential tactics to maximize your chances of escape.
Resource Management
Every item you find in Resident Evil Outbreak is precious. Unlike other Resident Evil titles, inventory space is severely limited, and items cannot be easily discarded or stored in item boxes. Plan your inventory carefully.
- Prioritize Healing Items: Always carry at least one healing item, such as a Green Herb, Blue Herb, or First Aid Spray. Combine Green Herbs to create more potent healing mixtures (e.g., two Green Herbs for a "Green Herb (x2)" or three for a "Green Herb (x3)"). A Blue Herb is crucial for curing poison.
- Ammunition Conservation: Ammunition is scarce. Avoid engaging every enemy. If an enemy can be bypassed without taking significant damage or wasting valuable time, do so. Reserve powerful weapons like the Shotgun or Grenade Launcher for tougher encounters or bosses.
- Key Items are Paramount: Key items often take up valuable inventory slots. Once a key item has served its purpose (e.g., unlocking a door), consider dropping it if you desperately need space. However, be absolutely certain it won't be needed again.
- Character-Specific Items: Remember that certain characters have unique starting items or abilities that can influence your inventory strategy. For instance, Kevin starts with a powerful 45 Automatic, while Alyssa has her Lockpick set.
Movement and Positioning
How you navigate the infected environments can be the difference between life and death.
- Avoid Direct Confrontation: Whenever possible, run past zombies and other weaker enemies. This conserves ammunition and prevents unnecessary damage. Learn enemy attack patterns to effectively dodge.
- Utilize Tight Spaces: Narrow corridors can be both a blessing and a curse. They can funnel enemies, making them easier to avoid or hit with area-of-effect weapons, but they can also trap you. Be mindful of your surroundings.
- Door Management: Closing doors behind you can temporarily halt pursuing enemies, giving you a moment to breathe or reload. However, some enemies can eventually break through doors.
- Know Your Escape Routes: Always be aware of potential escape routes or safe zones in each area. This is especially important when facing powerful enemies or when your health is low.
Infection Management
The T-Virus infection is a constant threat. Managing your infection rate is critical for long-term survival.
- Avoid Damage: Every hit you take from an infected enemy increases your infection rate. The best way to manage infection is to avoid getting hit in the first place.
- Antivirals: Antivirus items are rare but incredibly valuable. They significantly reduce your infection rate. Save them for when your infection is high, or for critical moments. You might find one in the Hospital's B1F Medical Storage in "The Hive" scenario, for example.
- Blood Packs: In scenarios like "The Hive," Blood Packs can be used to distract certain enemies, preventing them from attacking and thus preventing infection.
- Character Abilities: Some characters have abilities that indirectly help with infection. For example, George's Medical Set can create healing items, allowing you to sustain yourself longer and potentially avoid situations where infection would be inevitable.
Cooperation (Even with AI)
While playing with AI companions can be frustrating, understanding their basic behaviors can still be beneficial.
- Issue Simple Commands: Use the "Help," "Go," and "Come" commands to guide your AI teammates. They might pick up items you've overlooked or draw enemy attention.
- Share Items: If an AI character is low on health or needs a specific item (e.g., a Key for a door they are near), consider dropping it for them. They will often pick it up.
- Observe AI Behavior: AI characters will sometimes point out items or try to solve puzzles. Pay attention to their actions, as they can sometimes lead you to important discoveries.
