Boss Fight - Yawn

The giant snake, Yawn, is one of the most iconic and terrifying early bosses in Resident Evil. This encounter can be particularly challenging due to its venomous attacks and the tight confines of the Library. Preparation is key to surviving this slithering menace.

Recommended Inventory

  • Shotgun: This is your primary damage dealer. Ensure you have at least 10-15 shells.
  • Handgun: Useful for finishing off Yawn if you run out of Shotgun shells, or for dealing minor damage while repositioning. Bring a decent amount of ammo (20+ rounds).
  • First Aid Spray / Herbs: Yawn's venom can be deadly. Bring at least one First Aid Spray or a combination of Green and Blue Herbs to cure poison and heal damage.
  • Defense Item (Optional): A Combat Knife or Dagger can provide a last-ditch defense if Yawn grabs you, but focus on avoiding getting hit.

Phase 1: The Library Encounter

You'll first encounter Yawn in the Library after solving the book puzzle. This initial fight is more of a scripted event than a full boss battle. Your goal here is not to defeat Yawn, but to survive and escape.

  1. Initial Attack: As you enter the Library and approach the bookshelf, Yawn will burst through the wall. Immediately backpedal.
  2. Dodge and Run: Yawn will lunge and attempt to bite you. Your priority is to avoid its attacks. Do NOT try to fight it extensively here.
  3. Escape Route: After a few lunges, a section of the bookshelf will collapse, revealing an exit. Sprint towards this opening.
  4. Minor Damage (Optional): If you feel confident and have extra Shotgun shells, you can land a shot or two on its head as it lunges, but this is not necessary. The main objective is to get out.
  5. Poison Warning: If Yawn manages to bite you, you will be poisoned. You'll need to use a Blue Herb or First Aid Spray immediately after escaping the Library to prevent your health from steadily draining.

Phase 2: The Attic Showdown

The true boss fight takes place in the Attic. This area is much smaller and offers less room to maneuver, making Yawn's attacks more dangerous.

Strategy

The key to defeating Yawn is to exploit its predictable attack patterns and the environmental hazards.

  1. Positioning is Crucial: The Attic has a central pillar and several wooden beams. Use these as cover to break Yawn's line of sight and create distance.
  2. Yawn's Attacks:
    • Lunge: Yawn will lunge forward, attempting to bite you. This is its most common attack. Dodge by running to the side or backing away.
    • Coil and Strike: Sometimes Yawn will coil up before striking. This gives you a brief window to get a shot in before dodging.
    • Venom Spray (Remake): In some versions, Yawn can spray venom from a distance. Be aware of this and try to stay out of its direct line of sight if possible.
  3. Shotgun Blasts to the Head: The Shotgun is your best friend. Aim for Yawn's head whenever it exposes itself. Each successful hit will stagger it, giving you a moment to reload or reposition.
  4. Hit and Run: Fire 1-2 Shotgun shells, then immediately move. Do not stand still and try to unload your entire clip, as Yawn is fast and will likely counter-attack.
  5. Environmental Damage (Original Game): In the original Resident Evil, there's a specific strategy involving the rafters. If you can lure Yawn under the weakened wooden beams and shoot them, they will fall and deal significant damage to the snake. This can shorten the fight considerably. Look for the visibly damaged sections of the ceiling.
  6. Conserve Ammo: While the Shotgun is powerful, don't waste shots. Make sure each shell counts by aiming carefully. If you run low, switch to the Handgun for supplementary damage.
  7. Healing and Curing Poison: If you get bitten, immediately use a Blue Herb or First Aid Spray to cure the poison. Don't wait, as the poison will steadily drain your health. Use Green Herbs or First Aid Sprays to recover lost health.

Post-Fight

Once Yawn is defeated, it will drop the Death Mask with No Eyes. Collect this item, and take a moment to breathe. The path ahead is clear, but scavenge the area for any remaining items or ammo before proceeding.
