Character Stats & Abilities

Understanding your chosen character's strengths and weaknesses is paramount to surviving the horrors of the Spencer Mansion. Each S.T.A.R.S. member brings a unique set of skills and limitations to the field, directly impacting your gameplay strategy, item management, and combat effectiveness.

Jill Valentine: The Master of Unlocking

Jill Valentine is the more versatile and beginner-friendly character, boasting a balanced stat line and a crucial unique ability. Her adaptability makes her an excellent choice for players new to the original Resident Evil's unforgiving mechanics.

  • Inventory Slots: Jill starts with 8 inventory slots, giving her a significant advantage over Chris in terms of carrying capacity. This allows her to carry more healing items, ammunition, and key items, reducing the frequency of trips to item boxes.
  • Health: Jill's health pool is average. She can withstand a moderate amount of damage before entering "Caution" or "Danger" status.
  • Defense: Her defense is standard, meaning she takes typical damage from enemy attacks.
  • Attack Power: Jill's base attack power with standard weapons is also average. While she can hold her own, she won't be dispatching enemies as quickly as Chris without upgraded weaponry.
  • Unique Ability: Jill possesses the invaluable ability to use the Lock Pick. This item, found early in the game, allows her to open certain locked doors and drawers without needing specific keys. This often grants access to crucial shortcuts, ammunition, or healing items earlier than Chris can obtain them.

Jill's Strategy Tips:

  • Early Lock Pick Access: The Lock Pick is found in the Dining Room, on the small table near the fireplace, shortly after entering the mansion. pick it up immediately. Use it to open the locked drawer in the East Wing Save Room for some extra Handgun Ammo, and the locked door in the Medical Storage Room to bypass a longer route.
  • Item Management: With 8 slots, you have more breathing room. Prioritize carrying a weapon, a good supply of ammo (at least 20-30 rounds for your primary weapon), 1-2 healing items (First Aid Spray or Herb mixes), and any essential key items for your current objective.
  • Weapon Choices: Jill can use the Grenade Launcher, a powerful weapon found in the East Wing, second floor, near the Armor Key door. This weapon, especially with Flame Rounds, is excellent for dealing with Hunters and other tougher enemies.

Chris Redfield: The Brawn and the Bullet

Chris Redfield is the more challenging character, designed for players who prefer a more combat-oriented approach and are comfortable with tighter resource management. His higher durability and offensive capabilities come at the cost of inventory space and a unique utility item.

  • Inventory Slots: Chris starts with a mere 6 inventory slots. This severely limits what he can carry, forcing players to make difficult decisions about what to prioritize and to plan routes carefully around item box locations.
  • Health: Chris boasts a higher health pool than Jill. He can endure more hits before his health status deteriorates, making him more forgiving in direct combat encounters.
  • Defense: His defense is also superior, further reducing the damage taken from enemy attacks.
  • Attack Power: Chris has a slightly higher base attack power with standard weapons. This translates to needing fewer shots to down enemies, conserving precious ammunition.
  • Unique Ability: Chris does not have a unique utility item like Jill's Lock Pick. Instead, his unique "ability" lies in his inherent physical resilience and strength. He can also use the Lighter, which is a key item for both characters, but Chris starts with it from the beginning, whereas Jill finds it later.

Chris's Strategy Tips:

  • Strict Item Management: With only 6 slots, every item counts. Always carry your primary weapon, a minimal amount of ammo (15-20 rounds), and 1 healing item. Key items should be used or stored as soon as their purpose is fulfilled. Expect frequent trips to the Item Box (found in various save rooms, like the West Wing Save Room and the East Wing Save Room).
  • Combat Focus: Leverage Chris's higher attack and defense. Don't be afraid to engage in combat when necessary, but always prioritize headshots for zombies to conserve ammo. His increased durability makes close-quarters combat slightly less risky.
  • Weapon Choices: Chris can eventually acquire the Shotgun, a powerful weapon found in the Main Hall, second floor, by swapping it with the Broken Shotgun. This weapon is crucial for crowd control and taking down tougher foes. Master its spread for maximum efficiency.
  • Lighter Usage: Chris starts with the Lighter. Use it to burn zombie corpses (after they're downed) to prevent them from turning into Crimson Heads. This is crucial for long-term survival, especially in frequently visited areas like the Main Hall and Dining Room.
