Enemy Weaknesses & Resistances
Navigating the Spencer Mansion and its surrounding horrors requires more than just a steady aim; understanding the unique vulnerabilities and immunities of each creature is paramount to conserving precious ammunition and health items. This section details optimal strategies for dispatching the various B.O.W.s you'll encounter.
Zombies
The most common threat, these shambling undead are relatively slow but can quickly overwhelm if not managed. Headshots are the most efficient way to put them down permanently. A single shotgun blast to the head at close range is often sufficient. For handgun users, aim for 3-5 precise headshots. If you're low on ammo and they're isolated, a well-timed knife attack to the legs can stagger them, allowing you to run past. Be warned: some zombies, especially those encountered later in the game or in specific areas like the Guardhouse, can be more resilient.
- Weakness: Headshots (all weapons), Shotgun (close range), Explosive Rounds (Grenade Launcher).
- Resistance: Body shots with Handgun are inefficient. Knife attacks are generally too risky for direct combat unless you're confident in staggering.
- Strategy: Prioritize headshots. If you have the Shotgun, save its ammo for groups or more durable zombies. Avoid engaging multiple zombies in tight corridors if possible; sometimes, evasion is the best option.
Cerberus (Dogs)
These infected canines are fast and agile, making them difficult targets. Their speed means they can close distances quickly, often ambushing you through windows or doors. The best approach is to anticipate their movements and use weapons with a wide spread or quick firing rate.
- Weakness: Shotgun (effective for multiple targets or quick takedowns), Handgun (aim for the body as headshots are difficult due to their movement).
- Resistance: Knife is extremely risky due to their speed and attack pattern.
- Strategy: Listen for their growls, indicating their presence. When they burst through windows (e.g., in the West Wing hallway), be ready with your Shotgun. If using a Handgun, try to create distance and fire continuously as they charge.
Hunters
These reptilian humanoids are incredibly dangerous, known for their agility, powerful claw attacks, and devastating jump attacks that can decapitate you instantly on higher difficulties. They are introduced later in the game, primarily in the Guardhouse and underground areas.
- Weakness: Shotgun (2-3 direct hits, especially when staggered), Grenade Launcher (Explosive Rounds or Acid Rounds are highly effective, often one-shotting them).
- Resistance: Handgun is largely ineffective and wastes valuable ammo. Knife is suicidal.
- Strategy: Engage Hunters with powerful weapons. If you have the Grenade Launcher, Acid Rounds are particularly potent. When facing a Hunter, try to bait their jump attack, then sidestep and retaliate. In areas like the Guardhouse, where Hunters are plentiful, consider using the Magnum if you have sufficient ammo.
Spiders (Web Spinners / Black Tiger)
Giant spiders are a nuisance, often found in webs or dropping from ceilings. They can poison you, which requires a Blue Herb to cure. The larger variant, the Black Tiger, is a mini-boss.
- Weakness: Shotgun (effective for smaller spiders and the Black Tiger), Flamethrower (highly effective against the Black Tiger), Grenade Launcher (Explosive Rounds).
- Resistance: Handgun is less effective against the larger spiders.
- Strategy: For regular spiders, a few handgun shots or a single shotgun blast will suffice. For the Black Tiger in the Residence, the Flamethrower (found in the Residence itself) is your best friend. Equip it and unleash a continuous stream of fire to quickly dispatch it. If you don't have the Flamethrower, the Shotgun or Grenade Launcher will work, but require more careful positioning.
Crows
While not a major threat, crows can peck at you and cause minor damage. They are mostly found in specific rooms, like the Art Room.
- Weakness: Any weapon, even the Knife, can dispatch them.
- Resistance: None.
- Strategy: Generally, ignore them. If they are truly bothering you, a single handgun shot will kill them. Conserving ammo is key, so running past is usually the best option.
Snakes (Yawn)
The giant snake, Yawn, is a boss encounter. Its venomous bite can inflict poison, requiring a Serum or Blue Herb.
- Weakness: Shotgun, Grenade Launcher (Acid Rounds are particularly effective).
- Resistance: Handgun is very weak.
- Strategy: During your first encounter in the Library, focus on evasion and getting the Death Mask. You don't need to defeat it here. In the second encounter in the Attic, use the Shotgun or Grenade Launcher. Aim for its head when it's exposed. If playing as Jill, the Grenade Launcher with Acid Rounds will make short work of it. As Chris, the Shotgun is your primary damage dealer.
Plant 42
This massive, sentient plant is a boss found in the Residence. It has a core weakness that can be exploited.
- Weakness: Flamethrower (if playing as Chris), V-JOLT (if playing as Jill).
- Resistance: All conventional firearms are less effective.
- Strategy:
- As Jill: The optimal strategy is to create the V-JOLT chemical. Combine Water, UMB No. 3, and UMB No. 7 in the Chemical Storage Room to form V-JOLT. Take it to the roots of Plant 42 in the Aqua Ring and apply it. This will severely weaken the plant, allowing you to defeat it with just a few handgun shots.
- As Chris: You do not have access to the V-JOLT. Instead, you must fight Plant 42 directly. The Flamethrower (found in the Residence) is your most effective weapon. Aim for the central bulb. Conserve your Flamethrower fuel for this fight.
Chimeras
These grotesque, ceiling-crawling creatures are fast and can inflict significant damage. They appear in the Laboratory.
- Weakness: Shotgun, Grenade Launcher (Explosive Rounds).
- Resistance: Handgun is largely ineffective.
- Strategy: Chimeras are best dealt with using powerful, quick-firing weapons. The Shotgun is excellent for knocking them off walls or killing them as they approach. Be aware of their erratic movements and try to hit them while they are on the ground.
Tyrant (T-002)
The ultimate biological weapon and the final boss. This hulking creature is incredibly resilient.
- Weakness: Magnum, Rocket Launcher.
- Resistance: All other weapons are significantly less effective.
- Strategy:
- First Encounter (Lab): Focus on evasion. You cannot defeat the Tyrant permanently here. Your goal is to survive until the battle is interrupted. Use your most powerful weapons (Magnum, Shotgun) to create openings and avoid its attacks.
- Second Encounter (Helipad): This is the final showdown. The Rocket Launcher, dropped by Brad Vickers, is your ultimate weapon. Pick it up and fire it at the Tyrant to end the fight. Until then, continue to use your most powerful weapons (Magnum, Grenade Launcher) to keep it at bay.
