First Playthrough Recommendations

Welcome, rookie, to the Spencer Mansion! This guide is designed to help you survive your initial terrifying journey through the original Resident Evil, specifically focusing on the REmake (2002) and its subsequent ports. We'll emphasize resource management, crucial item locations, and strategies to keep you from becoming another zombie snack. Remember, every bullet counts, and every herb could be the difference between life and death.

General Survival Tips

  • Conserve Ammunition: This is paramount. Do not engage every enemy you see. Often, it's better to run past a zombie than to waste precious bullets. Aim for headshots when possible, but be aware that they are not always a guaranteed one-shot kill, especially early on. For standard zombies, two to three handgun shots to the head, or a few more to the body, will usually down them. If playing as Chris, his knife is more effective than Jill's, but still risky.
  • Inventory Management: Your inventory space is extremely limited (Jill has 8 slots, Chris has 6). Prioritize key items, healing supplies (herbs, First Aid Sprays), and your most reliable weapon. The Item Box is your best friend – use it frequently to store items you don't immediately need. Learn to anticipate what you'll need for the next few rooms.
  • Save Strategically: Ink Ribbons are finite. Save your game at Typewriter locations after significant progress, solving a major puzzle, or defeating a tough enemy. Don't waste them on minor advancements. Consider having a rotating save system (e.g., Save Slot 1, then Save Slot 2, then Save Slot 1 again) to prevent getting stuck in an unwinnable situation.
  • Explore Thoroughly: Hidden items, documents, and crucial puzzle pieces are often tucked away in obscure corners. Check every room, examine every object from multiple angles. Reading documents provides vital lore and sometimes hints for puzzles. Pay attention to the "examine" prompt changing color or text.
  • Combine Herbs: Green Herbs restore a small amount of health. Combining two Green Herbs creates a more potent healing item (50% health). Combining a Green Herb with a Red Herb creates an even more powerful healing item, restoring full health. A Blue Herb cures poison. Combining a Green, Red, and Blue Herb creates the ultimate healing item, restoring full health and curing poison.
  • Burn Corpses (REmake Specific): In the REmake, downed zombies can turn into more dangerous Crimson Heads if not decapitated or burned. Use the Kerosene and Lighter (found early on) to incinerate bodies. Prioritize burning zombies in high-traffic areas or those you know you'll pass again.

Early Game Walkthrough (Spencer Mansion Entrance)

Your journey begins in the ominous Spencer Mansion. Here's how to navigate the initial horrors as either Jill Valentine or Chris Redfield:

Main Hall & Dining Room

  1. Initial Cutscene & Encounter: After the infamous opening cutscene, you'll find yourself in the Main Hall. Your first task is to investigate the disappearance of Bravo Team. Head through the double doors directly in front of you to enter the Dining Room.
  2. Dining Room Exploration:
    • Small Key (Jill): If playing as Jill, check the small table near the fireplace. You will find a Small Key here. This is one of several Small Keys found throughout the mansion, used for unlocking specific drawers and doors.
    • Ink Ribbon: Look in the small cabinet in the corner of the Dining Room for an Ink Ribbon. Always pick these up.
    • Document: On the dining table, you can find a document. Examine it for lore.
  3. Return to Main Hall: Head back to the Main Hall.

West Wing Corridor & First Zombie Encounter

  1. West Door: From the Main Hall, take the door on the west side (to your left if facing the entrance). This leads to a long corridor.
  2. First Zombie Encounter (REmake Specific): As you proceed down this corridor, you will encounter your very first zombie. It will be feasting on Kenneth J. Sullivan, a member of Bravo Team.
    • Strategy: This is a mandatory fight.
      • Jill: Use your Beretta. Aim for the head. Two to three shots should down it.
      • Chris: Use your Beretta. Chris's handgun is slightly weaker than Jill's. Aim for the head. Three to four shots may be needed. Alternatively, you can try to use your Combat Knife, but it's risky for a first-timer.
    • Follow-up: After downing the zombie, consider using the Kerosene and Lighter (if you have them, found shortly) to burn the body. This prevents it from becoming a Crimson Head later.
  3. Dog Attack: Continue down the corridor. As you approach the next bend, a Cerberus (zombie dog) will crash through the window.
    • Strategy: For a first playthrough, it's often best to run past this enemy if you can, especially if you're low on ammo. If you must fight, use your handgun. Aim for quick shots as it lunges. Two to three handgun shots usually suffice.
  4. Save Room (West Corridor): At the end of this corridor, you'll find a door leading to a small room with a Typewriter and an Item Box. This is your first safe haven.
    • Store Items: Place any non-essential items in the Item Box. Keep your handgun, a few clips, and at least one healing item on hand.
    • Save Game: Use an Ink Ribbon to save your progress here. This is a good checkpoint after your first zombie encounter.
    • Important Items: You'll find Kerosene and a Lighter (Jill) or Empty Bottle (Chris) in this room. These are crucial for burning zombie corpses.

Crow Room & East Wing Access

  1. Crow Room: From the save room, exit back into the west corridor. Take the door directly opposite the save room entrance (it's the first door on your left as you re-enter the corridor). This leads to a room with several stuffed crows.
    • Dog Whistle (Chris): If playing as Chris, you'll find a Dog Whistle here. This is a key item for a later puzzle involving the Cerberus.
    • Shotgun Shells: Look carefully around the room for Shotgun Shells. Even if you don't have the shotgun yet, these are worth collecting.
    • Document: Check the desk for another document.
  2. East Wing Access (Jill): If playing as Jill, continue past the crow room to the next door on the left (the one at the end of the short hallway). This leads to the room with the infamous Shotgun trap.
    • Shotgun: You'll see the Shotgun mounted on the wall. If you simply take it, the door will lock, and the ceiling will begin to descend.
    • Puzzle Solution: To safely acquire the Shotgun, you need to find the Broken Shotgun (found later in the mansion) and swap it with the functional one. For now, just note its location. Do NOT attempt to take it without the Broken Shotgun unless you have a specific item to substitute (e.g., the Stone & Metal Object from the armor puzzle).
  3. East Wing Corridor: Exit the crow room (or shotgun room for Jill) and continue down the main west corridor. Take the door at the very end. This leads to a small hallway with a door on the right and another straight ahead.
    • Small Key (Jill): In the small hallway, if playing as Jill, check the small table or shelf for another Small Key.
    • Door Straight Ahead: This leads to the East Wing of the mansion, an area you'll explore soon.
    • Door on Right: This leads to a bathroom with a bathtub. You can drain the tub to find a key.

Continue to explore cautiously, always prioritizing survival and resource management. Remember to check your map frequently (press the map button) to keep track of where you've been and where you need to go. Good luck, and try not to get bitten!
