Walkthrough - Courtyard & Residence
Welcome, survivor, to the treacherous Courtyard and the enigmatic Residence! This section of our comprehensive guide will navigate you through these new environments, detailing every crucial item, enemy encounter, and puzzle solution. Be prepared for a shift in pace, as the open Courtyard gives way to the claustrophobic corridors of the Residence, teeming with new threats and intricate challenges.
Courtyard Exploration & Guardhouse Access
Upon exiting the Mansion, you'll find yourself in the Courtyard. While seemingly open, this area holds vital progression items and introduces new dangers. Your primary objective here is to gain access to the Guardhouse, which serves as the gateway to the Residence.
Courtyard Layout and Initial Actions
- Immediate Path: From the Mansion exit, proceed directly across the Courtyard.
- Shed Location: To your left, you'll spot a small, dilapidated shed. This structure is crucial for your immediate progression.
- Item Acquisition - Square Crank: Enter the shed. Unlike previous iterations, in the REmake, there is no separate 'Shed Key' required. The Square Crank is found directly inside the shed, typically on a shelf or workbench. This item is indispensable for accessing the Guardhouse.
- Courtyard Path: Continue along the main path of the Courtyard, heading towards the large, rusted gate.
Encountering Canine Threats
As you approach the large gate, be prepared for an ambush from the infamous Cerberus (zombie dogs). These enemies are fast, aggressive, and can quickly overwhelm an unprepared player.
- Enemy Type: Cerberus (Zombie Dogs)
- Behavior: They will charge and bite, often in packs. Their speed makes them difficult to target.
- Strategy:
- Prioritize Targets: Focus fire on one dog at a time to reduce the immediate threat.
- Weapon Choice: The Shotgun is highly effective for quick, close-range takedowns, often dispatching a Cerberus in one or two shots. The Pistol can work with precise headshots, but requires more ammunition and careful aiming.
- Strafing: Continuously move and strafe to avoid their lunging attacks.
- Environmental Awareness: Use the environment (e.g., narrow passages) to funnel them, making them easier to hit.
- Common Pitfall: Do not attempt to run past them unless absolutely necessary and you have a clear path. They will pursue relentlessly.
Accessing the Guardhouse Drawbridge
The large gate you encountered earlier does not lead directly to the Residence. Instead, it leads to a drawbridge that must be lowered to access the Guardhouse, which then provides passage to the Residence area.
- Drawbridge Mechanism: Locate the mechanism near the large gate. This is where you will use the Square Crank.
- Action: Insert the Square Crank into the mechanism and activate it. This will lower the drawbridge, creating a path to the Guardhouse.
- Progression: Cross the newly lowered drawbridge into the Guardhouse area.
The Guardhouse & Residence Approach
The Guardhouse acts as a small intermediary area, often containing a save point and some basic supplies, before you proceed to the Residence itself.
Guardhouse Interior
- Save Point: Upon entering the Guardhouse, you will typically find a Typewriter (save point) and an Item Box. Utilize these to save your progress and manage your inventory.
- Supplies: Look for Ink Ribbons near the typewriter and potentially some First Aid Spray or Ammunition in the immediate vicinity.
- Exit: Locate the exit from the Guardhouse that leads to an overgrown, winding path. This path will take you directly to the Residence.
Winding Path to the Residence
This path is often dark and winding, providing ample opportunities for ambushes.
- Enemy Encounter - Crows: You may encounter a flock of Crows. While not a significant threat, they can cause minor damage if they peck at you.
- Strategy: A single pistol shot or a quick knife swipe can usually disperse them without wasting valuable ammunition. Alternatively, you can often run past them without engaging.
- Environmental Hazards: Keep an eye out for any tripwires or environmental traps, though these are less common in the REmake's Residence approach.
- Residence Entrance: Follow the path until you reach the imposing main entrance of the Residence.
Inside the Residence - Ground Floor Exploration
The Residence is a multi-level building with a distinct layout from the Mansion. It features several key rooms, each with its own secrets, puzzles, and threats. Prepare for a more intimate and often more terrifying experience.
Main Hall & Dining Room
Upon entering the Residence, you'll find yourself in the Main Hall, a central hub for the ground floor.
- Main Hall:
- Save Point: A Typewriter and Item Box are typically located in the Main Hall, often near the entrance or a prominent staircase. save your game.
- Staircase: Note the main staircase leading to the upper floor; this will be crucial for later progression.
- Dining Room: From the Main Hall, the Dining Room is usually one of the first accessible rooms, often directly to your right or left.
- Enemy Alert: Be cautious! Zombies are frequently found lurking in the Dining Room. They often appear inanimate until you approach or disturb them. Engage carefully, aiming for headshots or using the Shotgun for quick kills.
- Key Items & Supplies:
- Residence Map: The Map of the Residence is consistently found in the Dining Room, typically on the dining table or a nearby cabinet. This map is essential for navigation.
- Ink Ribbons: Often found on the dining table or a side buffet.
- Ammunition: Pistol or Shotgun ammunition may be scattered on the table or in drawers.
Living Room & Library Puzzle
Proceed from the Main Hall to the Living Room, which often connects to the Library, a room central to a significant puzzle.
- Living Room:
- Layout: This room often features a fireplace and comfortable seating.
- Supplies: Look for a Green Herb on a sofa or coffee table. A Small Key might be hidden in a drawer or on a mantelpiece; these keys are often used for locked cabinets in other rooms.
- Library Access: The Library is typically accessible directly from the Living Room.
- Library Puzzle - Book Arrangement: The Library houses a critical puzzle involving the arrangement of books.
- Objective: You will need to find specific books (often marked with distinct colors or symbols) and place them in the correct order on a bookshelf. Clues for the correct order are usually found in files or notes scattered throughout the Residence.
- Reward: Successfully solving the book puzzle will reveal a hidden passage or compartment, granting you access to a crucial key item. In the REmake, this often leads to the V-JOLT chemical.
- V-JOLT: This chemical is essential for dealing with a specific plant-based enemy later in the Residence, allowing for a non-combat solution or significantly weakening it.
- Common Pitfall: Rushing the puzzle without finding all the clues can lead to frustration. Always read any notes or files you pick up.
Residence - Upper Floor Access & Further Exploration
To fully explore the Residence and progress, you must gain access to its upper floor, which holds more rooms, items, and challenges.
Ascending to the Upper Floor
- Staircase: The main staircase to the upper floor is located in the Main Hall. Ascend these stairs carefully.
- Upper Hallway: Once upstairs, you'll find yourself in an upper hallway that connects various rooms. Be wary of potential Zombies or other enemies patrolling this area.
Upper Floor Rooms and Key Items
- First Door on Right (Bedroom/Study): Typically, the first door you encounter on your right in the upper hallway leads to a bedroom or study.
- Supplies: Search thoroughly. You'll often find Shotgun Shells in a drawer, on a desk, or in a wardrobe. A File/Document providing lore, hints for future puzzles, or backstory is also common here.
- Bathroom Access: A small bathroom might be connected to this room. Always check bathrooms for hidden items like First Aid Spray, Small Keys, or even a Defense Item (e.g., Dagger).
- Other Upper Floor Rooms: Continue exploring the other rooms on the upper floor. These often contain:
- More Ammunition: Pistol, Shotgun, or Grenade Launcher rounds.
- Healing Items: Green Herbs, First Aid Sprays.
- Files/Documents: Crucial for understanding the narrative and solving puzzles.
- Puzzle Pieces: Items that are part of larger, multi-room puzzles.

- Map Usage: Constantly refer to your Residence Map to track your progress, identify unexplored areas, and plan your routes.
- Thorough Search: Examine every corner, open every drawer, and check behind every object. Many crucial items are subtly hidden.
- Enemy Awareness: Listen for enemy sounds (groans, shuffling). Some enemies may play dead or ambush you from unexpected locations.
- Defense Items: Remember to utilize your defense items (daggers, stun guns) when grabbed by enemies to escape damage and conserve health.
