Basic Strategy & Tactics
Welcome, new Rez Infinite players! While the game's core mechanics are simple, mastering the flow and maximizing your score requires a keen eye and strategic approach. This section will guide you through essential tactics to elevate your game, focusing on efficient enemy elimination, item collection, and boss encounters.
Understanding Your Arsenal & Evolution
- Lock-On Shot: Your primary weapon. Hold down the fire button to lock onto multiple targets, then release to unleash a volley of homing projectiles. The more targets you lock onto (up to 8), the more powerful and score-heavy your attack.
- Overdrive (Smart Bomb): Your ultimate weapon, activated by pressing the designated button (usually Triangle/Y). This clears the screen of most enemies and projectiles, offering a crucial lifeline during intense moments or a powerful offensive burst against bosses. You start with one and can collect more.
- Evolution Stages: Your avatar evolves through five stages, each increasing your health and the maximum number of targets you can lock onto.
- Stage 1 (Sphere): Basic form, minimal health.
- Stage 2 (Cube): Slightly more robust.
- Stage 3 (Pyramid): Improved health and lock-on capacity.
- Stage 4 (Octahedron): Significant health boost, higher lock-on.
- Stage 5 (Humanoid): Max health, max lock-on (8 targets).
Efficient Enemy Elimination & Scoring
The core of Rez Infinite's gameplay loop revolves around chaining enemy destructions for higher scores and better item drops. Here's how to optimize your approach:
- Prioritize Threat, Then Chain: While it's tempting to always go for 8-target chains, sometimes a quick 1-2 target lock-on is necessary to eliminate an immediate threat (e.g., a projectile-firing enemy) before it hits you. After clearing the immediate danger, look for opportunities to build larger chains.
- The "8-Lock" Bonus: Always strive for an 8-target lock-on whenever possible. This not only clears a large portion of the screen but also grants a significant score bonus and often yields better item drops, such as Evolution Items or Overdrive Items (Blue Spheres).
- Timing is Everything: Enemies often appear in waves or patterns. Observe these patterns and anticipate their movements to line up perfect 8-lock chains as they emerge. Don't rush your shots; a well-timed, fully-locked attack is more effective than several haphazard ones.
- Bullet Hell Management: In later areas, you'll encounter dense bullet patterns. Your Overdrive is your best friend here. Don't hoard it if you're about to take damage; it's better to use it and survive than to lose an Evolution Stage.
Item Collection & Management
Items are vital for survival and progression. Keep an eye out for these:
- Evolution Items (Red Cubes): These are your primary method of increasing your avatar's stage. They often drop from larger enemies or after successfully completing 8-lock chains. Prioritize collecting these, especially if you've taken damage and dropped a stage.
- Overdrive Items (Blue Spheres): These grant you an additional Overdrive charge. They are less common than Evolution Items and typically drop from mini-bosses or specific enemy formations. Collect these strategically; having an Overdrive ready for a boss fight or a particularly challenging section can be a game-changer.
- Gateways: These are the large, glowing portals that appear at the end of each area. Flying through them transitions you to the next section. Ensure you've collected all available items in the current area before proceeding, as you cannot return.
Boss Encounters
Each Area culminates in a unique boss battle. While specific strategies vary, these general tactics apply:
- Learn Patterns: Bosses have distinct attack patterns. Your first few attempts might be about observing these patterns and identifying safe zones or windows of opportunity to attack.
- Target Weak Points: Most bosses have glowing weak points. Focus your lock-on shots on these areas for maximum damage. Some weak points may only be exposed after certain attacks or phases.
- Overdrive for Damage & Defense: Don't hesitate to use your Overdrive during boss fights. It can clear a screen full of projectiles, allowing you to reposition or land critical hits, or deal significant direct damage to the boss itself, especially if you can hit multiple weak points simultaneously.
- Maintain Evolution Stage: Losing an Evolution Stage during a boss fight can be devastating due to reduced health and lock-on capacity. Prioritize dodging and collecting any Evolution Items the boss might drop.
