Customization & Progression — Rocket League Guide

Personalize your Rocket League Battle-Car with extensive customization options. Tailor your ride from paint jobs to goal explosions in the Garage.

Rocket League offers extensive customization options, allowing players to personalize their cars and express their unique style. From the paint job to the goal explosion, every element can be tailored. This section explores the progression systems and cosmetic customization features that make your car truly your own.

The Garage: Your Personal Workshop

The Garage is the central hub for all your cosmetic customizations. Here, you can modify:

  • Car Bodies: Choose from a wide variety of car models, each with its own hitbox characteristics (though this is a gameplay element, the visual choice is cosmetic). Popular bodies include the Octane, Fennec, Dominus, and Batmobile.
  • Decals: These are skins that cover the car body, ranging from simple patterns to intricate dess and animated effects.
  • Paint Finishes: Alter the material and texture of your car's paint, such as Matte, Anodized, Metallic Pearl, and Pearlescent Matte.
  • Wheels: Customize the look of your car's wheels. These can be standard, painted, or animated.
  • Rocket Boost: Select the visual effect that trails behind your car when you boost. Options range from simple flames to elaborate animations.
  • Toppers: Cosmetic items that sit on top of your car, like antennas, hats, or horns.
  • Antennas: Small decorative items that attach to the back of your car.
  • Goal Explosions: Spectacular visual effects that trigger when you score a goal.
  • Trails: Visual effects that appear behind your car when you use boost.

Progression Systems

Rocket League features several systems that reward players with items and currency as they play:

  • Player Leveling: As you gain experience points (XP) from playing matches, you level up your player profile. Higher levels can unlock basic cosmetic items and sometimes grant access to higher-tier Rocket Pass tiers.
  • Rocket Pass: This is a seasonal progression system. By playing matches and completing challenges, you advance through tiers, unlocking a variety of cosmetic items, including car bodies, decals, wheels, boosts, goal explosions, and trails. There is a free track and a premium (paid) track that offers sificantly more rewards.
  • Challenges: Weekly and event-specific challenges provide XP and sometimes specific cosmetic items upon completion. These encourage players to try different aspects of the game.

Acquiring Items

Cosmetic items are obtained through several methods:

  • Rocket Pass Tiers: As mentioned, this is a primary source of new items each season.
  • Item Shop: Psyonix offers featured item bundles and individual items for purchase using Rocket League Credits. These rotate regularly.
  • Blueprints: After matches, you can sometimes receive Blueprints for specific items. You can then use Credits to build these items.
  • Trading: You can trade items with each other. This is a popular way to acquire specific items not available through other means.
  • Drops: Special item drops can be earned through events or by watching official Rocket League esports broadcasts (RLCS Drops).

Credits and Trading

Rocket League Credits are the premium in-game currency used to purchase items directly from the shop, build items from Blueprints, or buy the premium Rocket Pass. Credits can be earned in small amounts through the Rocket Pass and challenges, or purchased with real money.

Trading involves exchanging items with other players. This is done through player-to-player lobbies. Item values are often determined by community consensus and rarity, with Credits frequently used as a medium of exchange.

Player Banners and Titles

Beyond car customization, you can also personalize your player identity:

  • Player Banners: These are displayed on your player card and during goal explosions, often featuring artwork or dess.
  • Titles: Earned through achievements, competitive ranks (e.g., 'Veteran'', 'All-Star', 'Grand Champion'), or special events, titles are displayed below your username.

By engaging with these progression systems and utilizing the extensive customization options, you can make your Rocket League experience uniquely yours, showcasing your achievements and personal flair both in and out of the arena.
