Game Modes & Playlists

Understand Rocket League's diverse Game Modes and Playlists, from casual matches to intense ranked play. Find your perfect way to compete and score.

Rocket League offers a diverse array of game modes and playlists, catering to various playstyles and preferences. Whether you're looking for casual fun, competitive challenge, or unique gameplay twists, understanding these options is key to finding your perfect match and enjoying the full breadth of the game.

Core Playlists (Ranked & Casual)

These are the foundational game modes that form the backbone of Rocket League's competitive and casual experience. You can play each of these in either a Ranked or Casual setting.

  • 1v1 Solo Duel: A high-pressure, individual skill test. Every mistake is amplified, making it excellent for honing mechanics and decision-making.
  • 2v2 Doubles: The most popular playlist. Requires strong teamwork, rotation, and communication. A good balance between individual skill and team play.
  • 3v3 Standard: A more chaotic and expansive mode. With three players per team, positioning and awareness are paramount to avoid overcrowding the ball and maintain defensive structure.

Ranked vs. Casual:

  • Ranked: Features a skill-based matchmaking system and a ranking ladder (Bronze to Supersonic Legend). Winning increases your rank, while losing decreases it.
  • Casual: Does not affect your rank. It's ideal for practicing new strategies, warming up, or playing with friends without the pressure of losing rank.

Extra Modes

These playlists introduce unique twists on the core Rocket League formula, offering a different kind of fun and challenge. They are generally played in a casual setting, though some players develop high-level skills within them.

  • Rumble: Power-ups are randomly assed to players, adding an element of chaos and unpredictability. Power-ups include things like the 'Tornado,' 'Gauntlet,' 'Magnet,' and 'Boxing Glove.'
  • Hoops: Played on a basketball-style court with a larger ball. The objective is to score by getting the ball into the opponent's hoop. Aerial skills are heavily emphasized.
  • Snow Day: The ball is replaced with a hockey puck. The physics of the puck are different from the ball, requiring adjustments to dribbling and shooting. Played on an ice rink.
  • Dropshot: Played on a hexagonal arena with a vulnerable floor. The objective is to break the opponent's floor by hitting the ball into their side, then score by getting the ball through the opening.

Other Game Modes and Features

  • Training: As mentioned in other sections, this includes Free Play, Custom Training (with codes for specific packs), and Tutorials. Essential for skill development.
  • Custom Games: Allows you to set up private matches with specific rules, arena choices, and bots. Great for playing with friends or practicing specific scenarios.
  • Tournaments: In-game tournaments offer a structured competitive experience with bracket play, culminating in a final match. They are a great way to experience a more organized competitive environment.
