A base is your sanctuary in Rust. It protects your loot and provides a safe respawn point. Here's how to get started:

  1. Gather Resources: You'll need a lot of wood and stone.
  2. Craft a Building Plan & Hammer: These are essential for placing and upgrading building blocks.
  3. Place a Foundation: Start with a 2x1 or 2x2 foundation.
  4. Build Walls & Doorways: Enclose your foundation.
  5. Place a Door: Craft a Wooden Door and a Key Lock. Place the lock on the door and create a key. Hide the key!
  6. Craft a Tool Cupboard: This is crucial. Place it inside your base. It prevents others from building within its radius and requires upkeep resources (wood, stone, metal) to prevent your base from decaying.
  7. Upgrade Materials: Use your hammer to upgrade wood to stone, then to metal, and finally to armored. Stone is a good early-game upgrade.
  8. Add a Roof: Protect your interior from the elements and aerial attacks.

Early bases should be small and inconspicuous. Focus on securing your loot and a respawn point. Don't build too close to monuments or other large bases, as you'll become an easy target.
