Objective: Base Fortification & Resource Automation

Advance your Rust base fortification and resource automation during the mid-game expansion phase. Prepare for long-term survival and strategic dominance.

·Multi-source verified (90/90)

Welcome to Phase 3: Mid Game Expansion! You've survived the initial scramble, established a basic foothold, and now it's time to solidify your position and prepare for the long haul. This phase, typically spanning hours 8-20 of your wipe, is all about transitioning from mere survival to strategic dominance. We'll be focusing on expanding your base, securing valuable resources, and laying the groundwork for advanced crafting and raiding.

In this chapter, you will learn how to fortify your base against increasingly sophisticated threats, moving beyond simple wood and stone to more resilient materials. We'll also delve into the crucial art of resource automation, showing you how to set up systems that passively gather materials, freeing you up for more impactful activities like monument runs, PvP, or advanced crafting. Mastering these techniques will not only make your life in Rust significantly easier but also provide a strong foundation for late-game progression.

By the end of this phase, your base should be a formidable fortress, and your resource income should be stable and consistent. This will allow you to confidently tackle the more dangerous and rewarding aspects of Rust, knowing that your home and supplies are secure. Get ready to upgrade, automate, and dominate!

Objective: Base Fortification & Resource Automation

As you progress into the mid-game, the threats you face will become more sophisticated. Simple wooden bases are easily raided, and even stone can be breached with enough C4. Your primary objective now is to make your base as raid-proof as possible while simultaneously setting up systems to passively gather essential resources. This two-pronged approach ensures both your safety and your continued progression.

The key to effective base fortification is layering and material upgrades. Don't just build outward; build upward and inward. Create airlocks, multiple doors, and strategically placed external walls. For resource automation, the focus will be on establishing a reliable fuel source and then utilizing deployables like the Auto Turret and various farming methods to secure your loot and gather materials without constant manual intervention.

Remember, a strong base and a steady stream of resources are the bedrock of any successful Rust wipe. Neglecting either will leave you vulnerable and struggling to keep up with more established players. Prioritize these objectives to ensure a smooth transition into the late game.

Base Fortification: Upgrading & Layering

Your starter base, likely made of wood or early stone, is no longer sufficient. It's time to upgrade to higher-tier materials and implement defensive layering. Follow these steps:

  1. Upgrade to Metal: Prioritize upgrading your core base to metal. This requires a significant amount of High Quality Metal (HQM). Focus on your tool cupboard room, main loot rooms, and critical pathways first. HQM can be found in green crates, oil rigs, or smelted from High Quality Metal Ore.
  2. Honeycomb Your Base: Add layers of triangular or square foundations around your core. These "honeycomb" layers force raiders to use more explosives to reach your vital areas. Upgrade these layers to stone or metal as resources allow.
  3. Airlocks & Multiple Doors: Implement at least two airlocks at every entrance. An airlock is a small room with two doors, preventing direct line-of-sight into your base. Use different door types (sheet metal, armored) and ensure they are locked with code locks.
  4. External Walls: Construct a perimeter of high external stone walls or high external wooden walls around your base. These provide an outer layer of defense and can deter casual raiders. Place them strategically to create chokepoints.
  5. Roof Access & Peeks: Design your base with roof access for defending against raiders. Create small "peeks" or windows that allow you to shoot out without exposing yourself too much.

Tip: Always carry building plan and hammer to quickly repair damaged walls during a raid.

Resource Automation: Fuel & Farming

Automating resource gathering is crucial for freeing up your time. The two main areas to focus on are fuel production and passive farming.

  1. Fuel Production:
    • Small Oil Refinery: Craft and deploy a Small Oil Refinery. This is your primary source of Low Grade Fuel (LGF) from Crude Oil. Place it in a secure location, preferably within your base or a well-defended external structure.
    • Crude Oil Gathering: Run the coast for oil barrels or venture to the Oil Rig monuments. Crude Oil is essential for LGF.
    • Pump Jacks: If you find a Pump Jack monument, securing it can provide a steady stream of Crude Oil, though it requires significant defense.
  2. Passive Farming:
    • Auto Turrets: While expensive, Auto Turrets are invaluable for base defense and can indirectly automate resource protection. Power them with a Small Generator and LGF.
    • Large Furnaces: Deploy multiple Large Furnaces for smelting ores. While not fully automated, they process large quantities quickly, reducing your time spent at the furnace.
    • Water Catchers & Planters: Set up Large Water Catchers and Planter Boxes for growing food and cloth. This provides a sustainable source of essentials without needing to constantly hunt or gather. Connect water catchers to sprinklers for efficient watering.
    • Composters: Use Composters to turn excess food and organic materials into fertilizer, which boosts crop yield in your planters.

Tip: Consider building a small, separate "farm base" nearby for your water catchers and planters if your main base is too compact.
