Once you have basic tools and a sleeping bag, your next goal is a small, secure base. A 1x1 or 2x1 wooden shack is sufficient. Craft a Building Plan and a Hammer. Place a foundation, then walls, a doorway, and a roof. Craft a Wooden Door and a Key Lock. Place the lock on the door and create a key. Crucially, hide this key somewhere safe or destroy it after locking the door if you're playing solo and don't need to share access. Immediately craft and place a Tool Cupboard inside your base. Load it with wood and stone to prevent decay. Upgrade your wooden walls to stone as soon as possible using your hammer. This basic base will protect your initial loot and provide a safer respawn point than a sleeping bag in the open. Avoid building too close to monuments or other large bases, as you'll be an easy target.
