1.1. First Steps & Initial Spawns
Welcome to Rust! Your first moments on the island are critical. Spawned with nothing but a rock and a torch, your immediate priority is survival. This guide will walk you through those crucial first steps, from finding your initial resources to understanding the immediate threats and opportunities that await you.
Upon spawning, you'll find yourself in a random location, often near a beach or a wooded area. Your inventory will contain a Rock and a Torch. The Rock is your primary tool for gathering basic resources, while the Torch provides light and a small amount of protection against the cold and certain creatures. Your first objective should be to gather enough Wood and Stone to craft a Wooden Club and a Campfire. These will be essential for defense and early warmth.
Consider your spawn location carefully. Are you near a forest for wood? Is there a visible rock node? Are there other players nearby? Early game encounters can be brutal. It's often wise to move away from your initial spawn point to find a more secluded spot to begin gathering and crafting. Look for areas with a good density of trees and accessible stone nodes. Avoid open fields where you are easily spotted and vulnerable.
The initial crafting menu is your best friend. Prioritize crafting:
- Wooden Club: A basic melee weapon for defense and resource gathering.
- Campfire: Essential for warmth, cooking food, and saling.
- Tool Cupboard: The heart of your base, preventing others from building nearby.
Once you have these basic items, you can start thinking about a rudimentary shelter. Even a small 1x1 with a door can offer sificant protection in the early hours. Remember, the Rust world is unforgiving. Be prepared to die, learn from your mistakes, and adapt quickly to survive.
