1.11. Basic Base Building Principles
Your base is your sanctuary in Rust, a place to store loot, craft items, and respawn. Understanding the fundamental principles of base building is crucial for survival and progression. This guide covers the essential elements of creating a secure and functional starting base.
The foundation of any successful Rust base lies in its strategic des and material choices. A well-built base not only protects your hard-earned resources but also provides a safe haven for crafting and planning your next moves. Key considerations for basic base building include:
- Location: Choose a spot that offers some natural cover, is relatively close to essential resources (wood, stone, metal), but not too close to high-traffic areas or known bandit camps.
- Materials: Start with wood, but aim to upgrade to stone as quickly as possible. Stone is sificantly more resistant to early-game raiding tools.
- Tool Cupboard: This is the heart of your base. It prevents others from building near your structure and allows you to authorize them to build within it. Protect it at all costs.
Here are the core principles for constructing your first secure base:
- The Tool Cupboard (TC):
- Place your TC in a central, protected location within your base.
- Immediately upgrade it to Stone (costs 200 Stone). This is your top priority.
- Ensure it's surrounded by at least one layer of walls and a door.
- Authorize yourself on the TC to prevent others from building nearby.
- Airlocks:
- Never have a direct entrance into your base. Always use airlocks.
- An airlock consists of two doors with a small space in between. This prevents players from running straight into your base if they manage to breach the first door.
- Use wooden doors initially, but upgrade to sheet metal doors as soon as possible.
- Honeycomb:
- This refers to adding extra layers of walls around your core base structure.
- Even a single layer of honeycomb sificantly increases the cost and time for raiders to breach your base.
- Start with a simple square or rectangular base and add honeycomb layers around it.
- Door Security:
- Always use keylocks or code locks on your doors. Code locks are generally preferred for ease of use and security.
- Upgrade your doors from wood to sheet metal as soon as you can craft them.
- Consider upgrading to armored doors for your most critical areas later on.
- Storage:
- Place Wooden Boxes and Barrels strategically within your base.
- Ensure they are not easily accessible from the outside.
- Spread your loot across multiple containers to minimize losses if one is raided.
- Crafting Area:
- Desate a space for your Workbench (Tier 1, 2, or 3) and other crafting stations.
- Keep this area secure and away from the main entrance.
Remember, your first base is a stepping stone. As you gather more resources, you'll be able to expand and fortify it, or even build a more advanced base elsewhere. Prioritize security and functionality from the very beginning.
