1.12. The Blueprint System & Research

Understanding Rust's blueprint system is fundamental to progression. Acquiring and researching blueprints unlocks the ability to craft new items, from basic tools to advanced weaponry. This guide explains how the system works and how to effectively research new technologies.

The blueprint system in Rust dictates what items you can craft. Initially, you have access to only a few basic recipes. To progress and craft more powerful gear, you must discover and learn new blueprints. This process involves exploration, scavenging, and strategic use of research facilities.

Blueprint Acquisition:

  • Starting Blueprints: You begin with a few essential blueprints already learned.
  • Scrap: The primary currency for researching blueprints. Found in crates, barrels, and dropped by NPCs.
  • Workbenches: Higher-tier workbenches are required to research higher-tier blueprints.
  • Looting: Blueprints can be found directly in loot crates (especially Military and Elite crates) or as drops from certain NPCs.
  • Trading: You can trade blueprints with each other.

The Research Process:

Once you have a blueprint you want to learn, you typically need to use a Research Table or a Workbench.

  1. Research Table:
    • This is the most basic research tool.
    • Place the item whose blueprint you want to learn onto the Research Table.
    • Interact with the table and spend the required amount of Scrap.
    • If successful, you will learn the blueprint for that item.
    • The cost in Scrap varies depending on the tier of the item. Higher-tier items cost more Scrap.
  2. Workbenches:
    • Workbenches (Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3) are required to research blueprints for items that require that specific Workbench tier to craft.
    • For example, to research a blueprint for a Tier 2 item, you need a Tier 2 Workbench.
    • The research process is similar: place the item on the Workbench and spend Scrap.
    • Workbenches also unlock the ability to craft items that require them, even if you already have the blueprint.

Blueprint Tiers:

Blueprints are generally categorized into tiers, corresponding to the Workbench tiers required to craft them:

Tier Workbench Required Example Items
Tier 0 None Stone Hatchet, Spear, Wooden Door
Tier 1 Tier 1 Workbench Metal Tools, Shotgun, Leather Armor
Tier 2 Tier 2 Workbench SAR, SMG, Metal Armor, Hazmat Suit
Tier 3 Tier 3 Workbench Assault Rifle, C4, Heavy Plate Armor

Tips for Blueprint Progression:

  • Prioritize: Focus on researching blueprints that will help you survive and gather resources more effectively (e.g., better tools, weapons, armor).
  • Scrap Farming: Actively seek out Scrap from monuments, crates, and barrels.
  • Workbench Tiers: Work towards building higher-tier Workbenches as quickly as possible to unlock more advanced blueprints.
  • Don't Research Everything: Be selective. Research items that al with your playstyle and immediate needs.

Mastering the blueprint system is a continuous process of exploration, resource management, and strategic decision-making. By understanding how to acquire and research blueprints, you'll unlock the full potential of Rust's crafting system.
