1.2. Basic Survival Needs: Hunger, Thirst, Health
In Rust, your survival hinges on managing three fundamental meters: Hunger, Thirst, and Health. Neglecting any of these will lead to a swift demise, often before you even encounter another player. Mastering their management is the absolute first priority for any new survivor.
Health: Your primary life force. It depletes from damage taken (PvP, wildlife, falling, radiation) and starvation/dehydration. When your health reaches zero, you die and respawn, losing all your gear.
- How to Restore:
- Medical Items: Bandages (slow heal), Medical Kits (fast heal), Syringes (instant heal, can cause side effects).
- Food: Most cooked food provides a small health regeneration over time.
- Rest: Simply surviving without taking damage allows health to regenerate slowly.
- Prevention: Avoid unnecessary risks like falling from heights or engaging in fights you can't win. Always carry medical supplies.
Hunger: This meter depletes over time, and faster when performing strenuous activities like running or fighting. When your hunger reaches zero, you begin to lose health.
- How to Satisfy:
- Food: Raw food (e.g., mushrooms, berries) can be eaten but may cause sickness. Cooked food (e.g., cooked chicken, bear meat) is safer and more effective.
- Hunting/Farming: Hunting animals provides meat, and farming offers crops.
- Fishing: A reliable source of food, especially early on.
- Prevention: Always keep a supply of food on hand. Cook raw food to make it safer and more nutritious.
Thirst: Similar to hunger, your thirst meter depletes over time and faster with exertion. Reaching zero thirst leads to health loss.
- How to Satisfy:
- Water Sources: Rivers, lakes, and the ocean can be drunk from directly, but may cause sickness.
- Water Bottles/Canteens: Craft these and fill them from safe water sources or water purifiers.
- Farming: Some crops, like Pumpkins, provide hydration.
- Cooking: Some cooked foods can also provide a small amount of hydration.
- Prevention: Carry water whenever you venture out. Be mindful of the biome you are in; deserts and arid areas deplete thirst faster.
Early Game Priorities:
Upon spawning, your immediate goals should be:
- Gather Wood and Stone: To craft a Campfire and a Stone Hatchet/Pickaxe.
- Find Food and Water: Look for mushrooms, berries, or hunt small animals. Drink from clean water sources if available, or craft a Water Bottle.
- Cook Food: Use your Campfire to cook any raw meat or mushrooms you find to prevent sickness and increase nutritional value.
- Craft a Tool Cupboard: To secure your immediate area and begin building a small shelter.
By consistently monitoring and managing your Hunger, Thirst, and Health meters, you lay the foundation for survival in Rust. These basic needs are the constant challenges you must overcome before you can even think about more advanced gameplay.
