1.6. Resource Gathering: Wood, Stone, Metal Ore

Resource gathering is the bedrock of survival in Rust. Wood, stone, and metal ore are the foundational materials needed for crafting tools, weapons, building structures, and progressing through the game. Mastering efficient gathering techniques is crucial for staying alive and thriving on the server.

Wood is the most abundant and readily available resource, essential for early-game construction and crafting. You'll primarily gather wood by hitting trees with your starting rock or a hatchet. Aim for larger trees as they yield more wood per hit. Keep an eye out for fallen logs on the ground, which can also be harvested. Wood is used for crafting basic tools like the stone hatchet and pickaxe, as well as building foundations, walls, and doors for your initial base. It's also a key component in crafting furnaces and campfires.

Stone is the next crucial resource, vital for upgrading your tools and base defenses. You'll find stone nodes scattered across the map, often appearing as grey, rocky formations. Use your pickaxe to mine these nodes. There are different tiers of stone nodes: small, medium, and large. Larger nodes yield more stone and often contain sulfur and metal ore as well. Stone is required to craft stone tools, which are sificantly more efficient than their wooden counterparts. It's also used for upgrading your base from twig to wood, and eventually to stone, providing much greater resistance to raids.

Metal ore is a more advanced resource, necessary for crafting higher-tier items and weapons. Metal ore nodes are typically found in more challenging locations, often near mountains or in specific monument areas. They appear as darker, metallic-looking nodes. You'll need at least an iron pickaxe to efficiently mine metal ore. Once mined, metal ore must be smelted in a furnace to produce metal fragments, which are then used in crafting advanced tools, weapons like the metal hatchet and pickaxe, firearms, and armored building components. High-grade metal ore, found in even rarer nodes or specific monuments, is required for the highest tier of crafting.

Here's a quick guide to resource gathering:

Resource Primary Use Gathering Tool Locations
Wood Early building, tools, fuel Rock, Stone Hatchet Forests, scattered trees
Stone Tool upgrades, base fortification Stone Pickaxe, Iron Pickaxe Rocky areas, hills, nodes
Metal Ore Advanced tools, weapons, armor Iron Pickaxe, Metal Pickaxe Mountains, specific monuments, rare nodes

Efficient resource gathering is a continuous process in Rust. Always be mindful of your surroundings, prioritize gathering what you need for your current objectives, and consider upgrading your tools as soon as possible to maximize your yield.
