5.10. Oil Rigs (Small & Large)

Oil Rigs, both Small and Large, are high-risk, high-reward monuments in Rust that offer some of the best loot on the map. These offshore installations are heavily guarded by scientists and often contested by other players, making them challenging but incredibly lucrative destinations for geared players.

The primary draw of Oil Rigs is the abundance of high-tier loot, including valuable components, weapons, and armor. They are also excellent sources of Crude Oil, which can be refined into Low Grade Fuel and High Quality Metal, essential for advanced crafting and vehicle operation. However, reaching and surviving these monuments requires careful planning and preparation.

Small Oil Rig:

  • Location: Typically found closer to the mainland than Large Oil Rigs.
  • Layout: A more compact structure with fewer levels and fewer scientists. It usually features a central tower and surrounding platforms.
  • Loot: Offers good loot, including component crates, weapon parts, and sometimes high-tier armor. It also contains a few oil barrels and potentially a pumpjack.
  • Threats: Guarded by a smaller number of scientists. Still contested by other players.
  • Access: Can often be reached by boat or by helicopter.

Large Oil Rig:

  • Location: Further out at sea, often requiring a longer boat or helicopter journey.
  • Layout: A massive, multi-level structure with numerous platforms, interconnected walkways, and a prominent central tower. It's a complex maze.
  • Loot: Contains a sificantly higher concentration of high-tier loot, including multiple elite crates, weapon crates, and component crates. It also features multiple pumpjacks for substantial Crude Oil extraction.
  • Threats: Heavily guarded by a larger and more aggressive contingent of scientists. Extremely likely to be contested by other well-geared players.
  • Access: Primarily accessed by helicopter due to its distance and the need for quick entry and exit. Boats can be used but are more vulnerable.

Navigating and Looting Oil Rigs:

  1. Preparation: Gear up with high-tier armor (e.g., Heavy Plate Armor), a powerful weapon (e.g., Assault Rifle, Shotgun), plenty of ammunition, medical supplies, and a way to transport loot (e.g., a boat or helicopter).
  2. Approach: Approach cautiously, using cover and observing for other players or scientist patrols. Helicopters are ideal for a quick insertion onto the rig.
  3. Clear Scientists: Systematically clear out scientists, prioritizing high ground and potential ambush points.
  4. Looting: Prioritize elite crates and weapon crates. Be aware of your surroundings at all times, as other players will likely be drawn to the monument.
  5. Extraction: Plan your escape route. If using a helicopter, ensure it's safely landed and ready for a quick departure.

Tips for Oil Rig Encounters:

Monument Primary Loot Primary Threats Recommended Gear
Small Oil Rig Components, weapons, Crude Oil Scientists, other players Tier 2/3 Armor, Assault Rifle/Shotgun
Large Oil Rig Elite Crates, high-tier weapons, HQM, Crude Oil Numerous Scientists, geared players Full Tier 3 Armor, high-tier weapons, explosives

Oil Rigs are endgame monuments. They offer the potential for massive gains but come with sificant risks. Success requires excellent PvP skills, strategic planning, and a willingness to engage in intense firefights. Approach with caution and respect the power of these formidable offshore installations.
