7.1. Basic Farming: Planting & Watering — Rust Guide
Farming in Rust provides a sustainable source of food and valuable resources, reducing your reliance on risky scavenging and hunting. This guide covers the fundamentals of planting seeds and watering crops to ensure a steady harvest.
To begin farming, you'll need a few key items:
- Plant Pot: Crafted from 50 Wood. These are essential for planting seeds indoors or in areas without fertile ground.
- Seeds: Found from harvesting Hemp, Corn, or Pumpkins, or purchased from the Outpost.
- Water: Essential for crop growth. You can collect water from rivers, lakes, or use a Water Catcher.
- Fertilizer (Optional): Composters can turn unwanted items into fertilizer, which speeds up crop growth.
Planting Seeds:
- Find a Suitable Location: You can plant seeds directly into the ground in most biomes, or use Plant Pots for more control. Plant Pots are ideal for indoor farming or in areas where you want to protect your crops from the elements and players.
- Place Your Plant Pot: If using a pot, place it on a flat surface.
- Interact with the Ground/Pot: Hold 'E' to bring up the context menu and select 'Plant Seed'.
- Choose Your Seed: Select the type of seed you wish to plant.
Once planted, your seed will begin to grow. However, growth is dependent on several factors, most importantly water.
Watering Your Crops:
Crops require a consistent supply of water to grow. The water meter for your plant will indicate its hydration level. If the meter drops too low, the plant will stop growing or even die.
- Using a Water Can: Craft a Water Can (10 Wood, 5 Cloth). Fill it from a water source and then use it on your plants. This is the most direct method.
- Water Catchers: Place a Water Catcher outdoors. It will passively collect rainwater, which you can then transfer to your plants using a Water Can or by directly interacting with the Water Catcher.
- Hydroponic Trays (Advanced): These require electricity and a water source connection but provide automated watering and faster growth.
Crop Growth Stages:
Crops go through several stages of growth. You can check the growth progress by looking at the plant. When a plant is fully grown, it will glow slightly and indicate that it's ready for harvest. Harvesting yields more seeds and the corresponding produce (e.g., Hemp, Corn).
Tips for Efficient Farming:
- Composters: Use composters to speed up growth.
- Lighting: For indoor farming, ensure adequate lighting.
- Protection: Build your farm within your base or use defenses to protect it from raids.
- Variety: Grow several crops for different food types and resources.
Consistent watering and a bit of strategic planting will ensure your farm becomes a reliable source of sustenance and valuable materials in Rust.
