7.17. Fishing Mechanics & Bait Types — Rust Guide

Fishing in Rust offers a relaxing yet rewarding way to gather food and valuable resources, especially in the early game. Understanding the mechanics, optimal fishing spots, and the different types of bait available can turn a simple pastime into a reliable source of sustenance and trade goods.

Fishing requires a Fishing Rod, which can be crafted at a Tier 0 Workbench using Wood and Cloth. Once you have your rod, you'll need to find a suitable fishing spot. Rivers, lakes, and the ocean are all viable locations, but certain spots may yield better results.

Fishing Mechanics:

  1. Equip the Fishing Rod: Hold the fishing rod in your hand.
  2. Find a Fishing Spot: Stand near a body of water where you can cast your line.
  3. Cast Your Line: Aim your crosshair at the water and press the primary attack button (left mouse button by default) to cast. Hold the button to cast further.
  4. Wait for a Bite: You'll see a bobber in the water. When a fish bites, the bobber will dip, and you'll hear a distinct sound.
  5. Reel In: Press the primary attack button again to reel in your catch. You may need to hold it to reel in faster.
  6. Fight the Fish: Sometimes, the fish will pull back. You'll need to alternate between reeling and letting go to tire it out. Watch the on-screen prompts.

Bait Types and Their Effects:

The type of bait you use sificantly impacts what you can catch and the rarity of your catches. Bait is placed into the fishing rod's inventory.

Bait Type Crafting/Acquisition Effect Common Catches
Worm Crafted (10 Cloth, 5 Fat) or found Basic bait, good for common fish. Trout, Perch, Small Fish
Maggot Crafted (10 Cloth, 5 Fat, 10 Bone) or found Slightly better than worms, attracts more varied fish. Trout, Perch, Salmon, Small Fish
Blood Worm Crafted (10 Cloth, 5 Fat, 10 Bone, 1 Human Corpse) or found Attracts rarer fish and occasionally other items. Requires a Human Corpse for crafting. Salmon, Tuna, Cod, Rare Items
Fish Bait Crafted (10 Cloth, 5 Fat, 1 Small Fish) Best bait for attracting rare fish and valuable items. Requires a small fish as an ingredient. Tuna, Cod, Rare Items, Valuable Components

What You Can Catch:

Beyond fish, fishing can yield several other items:

  • Fish: Various types of fish that can be eaten raw or cooked for hunger.
  • Components: Such as Metal Fragments, High Quality Metal, Gears, and Springs.
  • Junk: Items like Boots, T-shirts, and Scrap.
  • Rare Items: Occasionally, you might catch valuable items like Tool Kits or even Weapon Parts.

Tips for Successful Fishing:

  • Location Matters: Fishing in deeper waters or near structures like piers can sometimes yield better results.
  • Bait Management: Always ensure you have enough bait for your fishing session.
  • Inventory Space: Be mindful of your inventory space, as fishing can yield a lot of items quickly.
  • Combine with Other Activities: Fishing can be a safe way to gather resources while keeping an eye on your surroundings or while waiting for a raid to end.

Fishing is a low-risk, high-reward activity that can sificantly supplement your resource gathering efforts in Rust, especially when you're just starting out.
