4.1. Basic Resource Nodes (Wood, Stone, Metal)
Resource gathering is the lifeblood of survival in Rust. Your ability to efficiently harvest the fundamental resources—Wood, Stone, and Metal—will determine your progress from a naked survivor to a formidable force. Understanding where to find these nodes and how to extract them quickly is essential.
Wood: The most abundant resource, found on trees. You'll need Wood for almost everything in the early game, from crafting basic tools and weapons to building your first shelter. Your starting Rock is sufficient for harvesting wood, but a Hatchet or Chainsaw will sificantly speed up the process.
- How to Gather: Equip your Rock or Hatchet and aim at the base of a tree. Hold down the attack button to swing. The tree will eventually break, dropping Wood.
- Best Tools: Stone Hatchet, Metal Hatchet, Chainsaw.
- Quantity: Abundant in forests and wooded areas.
Stone: Found in rock formations scattered across the map. Stone is crucial for crafting more durable tools, weapons, and building components like the Stone Pickaxe and the Stone Hatchet. You'll also need it for building foundations and walls.
- How to Gather: Equip your Rock or Pickaxe and aim at a stone node. Hold down the attack button. The node will break, dropping Stone.
- Best Tools: Stone Pickaxe, Metal Pickaxe.
- Quantity: Found on rocky outcrops, hillsides, and specific resource nodes.
Metal Fragments: These are typically found in larger, metallic-looking rock formations or as drops from specific nodes. Metal Fragments are essential for crafting higher-tier tools, weapons, armor, and building components like the Metal Pickaxe and Metal Hatchet. You'll need them for more advanced base defenses.
- How to Gather: Equip your Stone Pickaxe or Metal Pickaxe and aim at a metal ore node. Hold down the attack button. The node will break, dropping Metal Fragments.
- Best Tools: Stone Pickaxe, Metal Pickaxe.
- Quantity: Found in specific ore nodes, often on hillsides or in mountainous regions.
Gathering Efficiency Tips:
- Tool Upgrades: Always prioritize crafting better tools. A Metal Pickaxe gathers Stone and Metal Fragments much faster than a Stone Pickaxe.
- Hatchets for Wood: While a Rock can chop wood, a Hatchet is sificantly more efficient.
- Targeting Nodes: Look for the distinct visual cues of each resource node.
- Server Bonuses: Some servers offer increased gather rates, which can dramatically speed up resource acquisition.
- Risk vs. Reward: Be aware of your surroundings while gathering. High-yield resource spots can attract other players.
Mastering the art of resource gathering is fundamental. The more efficiently you can gather, the faster you can progress and secure your survival in Rust.
