The Sodden Knight

The Sodden Knight is likely the first boss you'll encounter in Salt and Sanctuary, located at the end of the Festering Banquet area. This boss serves as an excellent introduction to the game's combat mechanics, emphasizing dodging, spacing, and identifying attack patterns.

Location and Preparation

You'll find the Sodden Knight at the very end of the Festering Banquet. Before entering the boss arena, ensure you've activated the nearby Sanctuary and replenished your healing items. A good strategy is to clear the path to the boss door so you can make a quick run back if you fall.

  • Sanctuary: The closest Sanctuary is located just before the boss arena. Rest here to reset your healing charges and respawn points.
  • Items: Stock up on Red Shine Jelly for healing. If you have any Grenado or Throwing Knives, they can be useful for extra damage during openings.
  • Equipment: Equip your best armor for physical defense. For weapons, choose something that swings relatively quickly to allow for hit-and-run tactics.

Boss Strategy

The Sodden Knight has a fairly predictable moveset, making him a good boss to learn the game's combat rhythm. His attacks are mostly physical, with one ranged magic attack.

Phase 1: Melee Attacks

In his first phase, the Sodden Knight will primarily use a series of melee attacks with his greatsword.

  • Overhead Slam: He'll raise his sword high and bring it down in a powerful vertical strike. This is slow and heavily telegraphed. Dodge through him or roll backward.
  • Horizontal Swings: He performs one or two wide horizontal swings. These have decent reach. Roll under or through these attacks.
  • Charge Attack: He may charge a short distance and then unleash a powerful swing. Dodge to the side or through him as he charges.

General Strategy for Phase 1: The key here is to bait out an attack, dodge it, and then get in 1-2 hits before backing off. He has a slight recovery period after each attack. Prioritize staying mobile and not getting greedy with your attacks.

Phase 2: Adding Magic

Once the Sodden Knight's health drops to approximately 50%, he will begin to incorporate a magical attack into his repertoire.

  • Water Orb: He will briefly glow blue and then launch a slow-moving water orb projectile. This orb travels in a straight line across the arena. Simply roll through the orb or jump over it.

General Strategy for Phase 2: Continue with the hit-and-run tactics from Phase 1. When he casts the Water Orb, treat it as an opportunity to close the distance if you're far away, or to get a quick heal in if you're safe. The orb itself is easy to avoid, so don't let it distract you from his melee attacks.

Tips for Success

  • Stamina Management: Dodging and attacking consume stamina. Always leave enough in your bar for at least one emergency dodge.
  • Light Roll: If your equip load is below 25%, you'll perform a "light roll" which covers more distance and has more invincibility frames. This can make dodging much easier.
  • Shields: While possible to block some of his attacks, his greatsword hits hard and will quickly deplete your stamina, leaving you vulnerable. Dodging is generally safer.
  • Damage Type: The Sodden Knight is not particularly resistant to any damage type, so use your strongest weapon.
  • Patience: Don't rush. Learn his patterns, get a few hits in, and retreat. This fight is a marathon, not a sprint.

Rewards

Upon defeating The Sodden Knight, you will receive:

  • Salt: A significant amount of Salt, essential for leveling up.
  • Shimmering Pearl: A rare crafting material.
  • Sodden Knight's Ashes: Used to transmute specific weapons and armor.

After defeating him, proceed to the right to continue your journey through the Bandit's Pass.
