Spells, Incantations & Prayers
Mastering the arcane arts in Salt and Sanctuary can turn the tide of battle, offering powerful offensive capabilities, crucial defensive buffs, and invaluable utility. This section will guide you through the different schools of magic, how to acquire them, and strategies for effective use.
Understanding Magic Types
There are three primary categories of magic in the game, each scaling with a different stat and requiring specific catalysts:
- Spells (Arcane): These are traditional offensive and utility magic, primarily dealing elemental damage or providing buffs. They scale with the Magic stat and require a Wand or Staff to cast.
- Incantations (Divine): Focused on divine power, Incantations offer healing, protective buffs, and some offensive light-based attacks. They scale with the Wisdom stat and require a Tome to cast.
- Prayers (Black): Drawing on dark and forbidden powers, Prayers often involve debuffs, curses, and potent dark damage. They scale with the Willpower stat and require a Symbol to cast.
Acquiring New Magic
New Spells, Incantations, and Prayers are not simply found; they must be learned. This is typically done through two main methods:
- Skill Tree Unlocks: Many basic and intermediate magical abilities are unlocked directly within the Skill Tree. As you invest Salt and Black Pearls into your chosen magical stat (Magic, Wisdom, or Willpower), you'll gain access to nodes that grant new spells. Prioritize these nodes early if you plan a magic-focused build.
- Obtaining from NPCs/Creeds: More advanced or specialized magic often requires joining a specific Creed and reaching a certain Devotion level, or purchasing them from specific NPCs.
Spells (Arcane)
Spells are the domain of the mage, offering a wide array of elemental attacks and utility. They are learned by investing in the Magic stat on the Skill Tree.
Key Spells & Locations:
- Flame Barrage: A basic but effective fire projectile. Unlocked early in the Magic branch of the Skill Tree. Excellent for early-game ranged damage.
- Lightning Bolt: A quick, single-target lightning strike. Found slightly deeper in the Magic Skill Tree. Useful for hitting fast-moving enemies.
- Arcane Weapon: Buffs your equipped weapon with arcane damage. Essential for hybrid builds. Unlocked via the Magic Skill Tree.
- Fire and Sky: Summons a powerful burst of fire from above. A strong area-of-effect (AoE) spell. Requires significant investment in Magic.
- Dark Swarm: Unleashes a cloud of dark projectiles. Acquired later in the Magic Skill Tree.
Catalysts:
You'll need a Wand or Staff. The Wooden Wand is a starting option for Mages. Look for the Iron Wand in the Castle of Storms, or the powerful Black Sands Staff dropped by the Kraeken Cyclops in the Kraeken Cyclops area.
Incantations (Divine)
Incantations are the strength of the cleric, providing healing, protection, and holy damage. They are learned by investing in the Wisdom stat on the Skill Tree.
Key Incantations & Locations:
- Heal: Your bread and butter healing spell. Unlocked very early in the Wisdom branch. Crucial for survivability.
- Divine Blessed Weapon: Imbues your weapon with holy damage. Excellent for fighting undead and unholy creatures. Found in the Wisdom Skill Tree.
- Mend: A stronger healing spell than Heal. Requires more Wisdom investment.
- Guardian Light: Summons a protective orb that damages nearby enemies. Acquired later in the Wisdom Skill Tree.
- Retribution: A powerful burst of holy energy. Often found deeper in the Wisdom Skill Tree.
Catalysts:
You'll need a Tome. The Wooden Tome is a starting option for Clerics. The Iron Tome can be found in the Bandit's Pass. For a powerful late-game option, seek out the Lord's Tome.
Prayers (Black)
Prayers delve into forbidden magic, offering dark offensive spells and debilitating curses. They are learned by investing in the Willpower stat on the Skill Tree.
Key Prayers & Locations:
- Dark Reach: A basic dark projectile. Unlocked early in the Willpower branch. Good for harassing enemies from a distance.
- Poison Gas: Creates a cloud of toxic gas, inflicting poison. Useful for area denial and sustained damage. Found in the Willpower Skill Tree.
- Black Blessed Weapon: Enchants your weapon with dark damage. Effective against holy enemies. Unlocked via the Willpower Skill Tree.
- Whisper of Regret: A potent dark magic attack. Requires significant Willpower investment.
- Gravewalker: Summons a spectral ally to fight alongside you. A unique and powerful utility prayer. Acquired later in the Willpower Skill Tree.
Catalysts:
You'll need a Symbol. The Wooden Symbol is a basic starting option. The Iron Symbol can be found in the Hager's Cavern. The Skull Symbol is a strong choice for dedicated dark magic users.
General Magic Strategy Tips
- Stamina Management: All magic consumes stamina. Keep an eye on your stamina bar, especially during boss fights, to avoid being caught defenseless.
- Attunement: Spells, Incantations, and Prayers require Attunement slots to be equipped. Increase your Attunement stat to gain more slots, allowing for a wider variety of spells to be readily available.
- Creed Benefits: Joining Creeds like the Keepers of Fire and Sky (Spells), Devara's Light (Incantations), or The House of Splendor (Prayers) will grant access to unique, powerful magic and items that enhance your chosen magical path.
- Upgrade Your Catalyst: Just like weapons, your Wands, Tomes, and Symbols can be upgraded at a Blacksmith to increase their scaling and potency. Prioritize this for significant damage boosts.
- Mix and Match: While specializing is often effective, don't be afraid to dabble. Even a melee build can benefit from a few utility spells like Heal or Arcane Weapon.
