Prologue: The Ship

Welcome, unseasoned traveler, to the perilous world of Salt and Sanctuary! Your journey begins aboard a storm-tossed vessel, a seemingly innocuous setting that quickly transforms into a brutal tutorial. This section will guide you through the initial chaos, preparing you for the trials ahead.

Initial Awakening and Movement

You'll awaken on the deck of the ship, disoriented and vulnerable. Your first task is to familiarize yourself with the basic controls. The game will prompt you with on-screen button indicators for movement, jumping, and interacting. Take a moment to experiment with these. Head right.

  • Movement: Use the left analog stick or D-pad to move your character.
  • Jump: Press the Jump button (typically X on PlayStation, A on Xbox, B on Switch) to jump. A short jump is often sufficient, but a long press will result in a higher leap.
  • Interact: Press the Interact button (typically Circle on PlayStation, B on Xbox, A on Switch) to open doors, pick up items, and speak with NPCs.

First Encounters and Combat Basics

As you proceed right, you'll encounter your first enemies: the Drowned Sailors. These shambling horrors are slow but can deal significant damage if you're not careful. This is your chance to learn the fundamentals of combat.

  • Light Attack: Press the Light Attack button (typically Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, Y on Switch) for quick, less damaging strikes.
  • Heavy Attack: Hold the Light Attack button for a charged, more powerful attack. This often breaks enemy guards or stuns them.
  • Block: Hold the Block button (typically L1 on PlayStation, LB on Xbox, L on Switch) to raise your shield. Blocking reduces incoming damage but consumes stamina.
  • Dodge/Roll: Press the Dodge button (typically R1 on PlayStation, RB on Xbox, R on Switch) while moving to quickly evade attacks. This is crucial for avoiding damage and repositioning.
  • Stamina Management: Pay close attention to your green stamina bar. Every attack, block, and dodge consumes stamina. Running out leaves you vulnerable.

Defeat the two Drowned Sailors you encounter. Don't be afraid to take a hit or two; this is a learning experience. After defeating them, continue moving right.

Looting and Item Acquisition

You'll soon come across a glowing item on the ground. This is your first opportunity to collect loot. Approach it and press the Interact button.

  • Item: You'll pick up a Small Bag of Salt. Salt is the primary currency and experience point equivalent in Salt and Sanctuary. You'll need a lot of it.

Continue right, dispatching any additional Drowned Sailors. You'll find another Small Bag of Salt near a broken crate.

The First Boss: The Kraeken Cyclops

As you reach the far right of the ship's deck, a massive, grotesque creature will emerge from the depths – the Kraeken Cyclops. This is your first boss encounter, and it's designed to be a challenging introduction to the game's difficulty.

Kraeken Cyclops Strategy:

  • Phase 1 (Tentacle Attacks): The Cyclops will primarily use its large tentacles to sweep across the deck.
    • Horizontal Sweep: Dodge roll through the tentacle as it sweeps. Rolling away will likely still catch you.
    • Vertical Slam: The tentacle will rise high before slamming down. Dodge roll to the side just before impact.
    • Eye Beam: Occasionally, its eye will glow, and it will fire a slow-moving beam. Dodge roll through it or jump over it.
  • Attacking: Your primary window for attack is after it completes a tentacle sweep or slam. Get a few hits in on its tentacles or head, then be prepared to dodge its next attack.
  • Patience is Key: Don't get greedy with your attacks. Focus on learning its patterns and dodging effectively. This fight is a test of endurance and timing.
  • Healing: If you picked a class that starts with healing items (e.g., a Knight with Flasks of Crimson Tears), use them sparingly when your health is low.

Upon defeating the Kraeken Cyclops, you'll be rewarded with a significant amount of Salt and a Stone of Remembrance. The ship will then be utterly destroyed, and you'll awaken on the shores of the mysterious island, ready to begin your true journey.
