HUD (Heads-Up Display)

The Heads-Up Display in Salt and Sanctuary is your primary source of real-time information during gameplay. Mastering its elements is crucial for survival, especially in challenging encounters. Pay close attention to these indicators to make informed decisions about combat, healing, and resource management.

Top-Left Corner: Character Status

  • Health Bar (Red): This prominent red bar represents your character's current HP. When it depletes, your character dies. Keep a close eye on it during combat.
  • Stamina Bar (Green): Located directly below the Health Bar, this green bar dictates your ability to perform actions like attacking, dodging, blocking, and sprinting. When it's empty, you'll be unable to perform these actions until it regenerates.
  • Focus Bar (Blue): Situated beneath the Stamina Bar, the blue Focus bar is essential for magic and prayer users. Each spell or prayer consumes a certain amount of Focus. It regenerates slowly over time, or can be instantly refilled using specific items.
  • Buff/Debuff Icons: Small icons may appear near your character's status bars, indicating active buffs (positive effects, like increased damage from a Flask of Focus) or debuffs (negative effects, like poison from a Venomous Blade). Hovering over them in the inventory menu (or pausing the game) can provide more details.

Bottom-Left Corner: Item Quick-Slots

This area displays your currently equipped quick-slot items, allowing for rapid use without opening the main inventory. You can cycle through these items using the designated quick-slot button (e.g., Square on PlayStation, X on Xbox, or 'E' on PC by default).

  • Consumable Slot 1: Typically reserved for your primary healing item, the Flask of Crimson Tears. Ensure you always have this equipped and know its position.
  • Consumable Slot 2: Often used for secondary healing or utility items like the Flask of Focus (for magic/prayer users), Bandages (to cure bleeding), or Antidotes (to cure poison).
  • Consumable Slot 3: Flexible slot for items like Throwing Knives, Firebombs, or Stone Roots (for temporary invincibility).
  • Equipped Weapon/Shield: Icons representing your currently active weapon in your right hand and shield/off-hand item in your left hand. These change dynamically as you swap equipment.

Bottom-Right Corner: Salt & Gold

  • Salt Counter: Displays your current amount of Salt, the primary currency and experience points in Salt and Sanctuary. Losing all your Salt upon death is a harsh penalty, so keep an eye on this number, especially when approaching a Sanctuary.
  • Gold Counter: Shows your current Gold reserves, used for purchasing items from Merchants and upgrading equipment. Gold is retained upon death, unlike Salt.

Center-Screen: Interaction Prompts & Damage Numbers

  • Interaction Prompt: When near an interactable object (e.g., a ladder, a chest, a Sanctuary, or an NPC), a prompt will appear, usually indicating the action button (e.g., 'X' on PlayStation, 'A' on Xbox, or 'F' on PC).
  • Damage Numbers: When you deal damage to an enemy, or an enemy deals damage to you, numerical values will briefly appear above the affected entity, indicating the amount of damage dealt. Critical hits are often displayed in a different color or with a larger font.
  • Status Effect Notifications: Brief text notifications will appear here when you apply or suffer from a status effect (e.g., "Poisoned," "Bleeding," "Stunned").

By understanding and constantly monitoring your HUD, you can react quickly to threats, manage your resources effectively, and ultimately improve your chances of survival in the treacherous world of Salt and Sanctuary.
