Understanding the Posture Meter

The Posture Meter is a fundamental mechanic in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, representing an enemy's (and Sekiro's) ability to maintain their guard and balance during combat. Mastering its management is key to victory.

The Posture Meter appears above regular enemies' heads and at the top center of the screen for bosses and mini-bosses. It fills up as enemies block or deflect your attacks, and depletes as they successfully block or deflect yours. When an enemy's Posture Meter is full, they become staggered, leaving them vulnerable to a devastating Deathblow.

How to Fill an Enemy's Posture Meter:

  • Aggressive Offense: Continuously attacking an enemy, even if they block, will gradually fill their Posture Meter.
  • Perfect Deflections (Parries): This is the most effective way to build enemy Posture. Successfully deflecting an enemy's attack at the last moment deals significant Posture damage and prevents your own Posture from being filled.
  • Combat Arts: Certain Combat Arts are designed to deal high Posture damage.
  • Prosthetic Tools: Some Prosthetic Tools, like the Loaded Axe, can deal substantial Posture damage.
  • Exploiting Openings: Attacking an enemy when they are recovering from an attack or performing a slow animation will also contribute to their Posture damage.

Managing Your Own Posture:

Sekiro also has a Posture Meter. If it fills completely, he will be staggered, leaving him vulnerable to a Deathblow. To manage your Posture:

  • Hold Block: Holding the block button allows your Posture to recover faster.
  • Create Distance: Sometimes, stepping back to create space will allow your Posture to recover naturally.
  • Use Gokan's Sugar: This consumable item temporarily boosts your Posture defense and recovery.
Element Effect How to Influence
Enemy Posture Staggered state, vulnerable to Deathblow Attacks, Deflections, Combat Arts, Prosthetics
Sekiro's Posture Staggered state, vulnerable to Deathblow Blocking, Creating Distance, Gokan's Sugar

Mastering the Posture system is crucial for Sekiro's combat. It encourages an aggressive yet defensive playstyle, rewarding precise timing and strategic engagement.
