Vitality Explained
Vitality, often referred to as Health, is a core stat in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that determines how much damage the Wolf can sustain before falling in combat. It is represented by a red bar on the HUD. When this bar depletes entirely, the Wolf dies, forcing You to respawn at the last visited Sculptor's Idol and potentially lose experience and Sen. Maintaining high Vitality is paramount for survival, especially during challenging boss encounters.
Vitality can be increased through two primary methods: acquiring Prayer Beads and upgrading the Healing Gourd. Prayer Beads are found by defeating mini-bosses and bosses, or discovered in hidden locations. Collecting four Prayer Beads allows you to increase your maximum Vitality and Posture by visiting a Sculptor's Idol. The Healing Gourd, obtained early in the game, functions similarly to the Estus Flask in Dark Souls, providing a limited number of healing charges that replenish upon resting at an Idol. Emma, a key NPC at the Dilapidated Temple, can upgrade the Healing Gourd using Gourd Seeds, increasing the amount of Vitality restored per use. Additionally, consumables like Pellets can provide slow Vitality regeneration over time, offering a supplementary healing option.
