Mastering the Deathblow Mechanic
The Deathblow is a critical mechanic in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, representing a powerful, unblockable finishing move that can instantly defeat weaker enemies or remove one of a boss's health points. Mastering the conditions and execution of Deathblows is fundamental to Sekiro's combat and survival.
A Deathblow can be performed on enemies when their Posture gauge is sufficiently filled, or when their Vitality is critically low. For most standard enemies, filling their Posture gauge is the most reliable way to set up a Deathblow. This is achieved through a combination of attacking and, more importantly, deflecting their attacks. Successfully deflecting an enemy's strikes rapidly increases their Posture damage.
When an enemy's Posture is broken, a red circular icon will appear above their head, indicating that a Deathblow is possible. Approach the enemy and press the attack button (R1) to execute the Deathblow. For mini-bosses and main bosses, a Deathblow typically removes one of their health bars, and they often require multiple Deathblows to be defeated. Be aware that some enemies, particularly those with specific resistances or abilities, may require their Vitality to be significantly depleted before a Deathblow can be initiated, even if their Posture is high.
