Deflection
Deflection is the cornerstone of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice's combat system, distinguishing it from other FromSoftware titles. Mastering deflection is not merely about blocking; it's about perfectly timing your L1 button press to parry an incoming attack, negating damage and building the enemy's Posture.
Unlike a simple block, a successful deflection results in a distinct sound and visual cue, often accompanied by sparks. This action not only protects Sekiro but also significantly contributes to breaking the enemy's Posture, paving the way for a devastating Deathblow. Conversely, mistimed deflections or holding the block button for too long will result in taking chip damage and increased Posture buildup.
Key aspects of Deflection:
- Timing is Crucial: The L1 button must be pressed just as an enemy's attack is about to land. Holding L1 will result in a block, which is less effective for breaking Posture and recovers Posture slower.
- Posture Damage: Successfully deflecting attacks deals significant Posture damage to the enemy. Repeated perfect deflections are the primary method for breaking an enemy's guard.
- Countering Perilous Attacks: While most perilous attacks (indicated by a red Kanji symbol) cannot be deflected, some, like the thrust attack, can be countered with the Mikiri Counter, which is a form of deflection.
- Enemy Feedback: Pay attention to the visual and auditory feedback. A successful deflection has a distinct clang and sparks. If you hear a dull thud, it was a block.
- Posture Recovery: After a successful deflection, Sekiro's Posture recovers much faster than after a block. This allows for sustained engagement.
- Learning Enemy Rhythms: Each enemy and boss has unique attack timings. Learning these rhythms is essential for consistent deflection.
The effectiveness of deflection is amplified when combined with other combat mechanics. For instance, deflecting a flurry of attacks and then immediately following up with a quick strike or a Combat Art can quickly stagger an opponent. Mastering deflection is the single most important skill for success in Sekiro.
