The Mikiri Counter: Defeating Thrusts

The Mikiri Counter is one of the most fundamental and powerful defensive techniques Sekiro learns, specifically designed to counter Perilous Thrust Attacks. When an enemy sals a thrust with the 'Danger' kanji, instead of dodging or blocking, Sekiro can perform a swift, forward step to stomp on the incoming blade, dealing significant Posture damage to the attacker and negating the thrust entirely.

This skill is learned early in the game, often through tutorials or by speaking with Hanbei the Undying at the Dilapidated Temple. Mastering the Mikiri Counter is absolutely essential for progressing through Sekiro, as many enemies and bosses utilize thrust attacks as part of their repertoire. Successfully executing a Mikiri Counter not only prevents damage but also builds the enemy's Posture bar much faster than a standard block or deflect.

The timing for the Mikiri Counter is crucial. You must press the dodge button (Circle by default on PlayStation) just as the enemy's thrust attack is about to connect. A successful counter will be accompanied by a distinct sound effect and animation. Failing to time it correctly will result in Sekiro taking damage. The reward for mastering this technique is immense, as it turns one of the most dangerous enemy attacks into a significant offensive opportunity.
