Understanding Perilous Attacks
Perilous Attacks are a core mechanic in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, representing the most dangerous moves enemies can perform. Recognizing and countering these attacks is essential for survival and victory. When an enemy prepares a Perilous Attack, a red Kanji symbol will flash above Sekiro's head, saling the need for immediate and precise action.
There are three main types of Perilous Attacks that you will encounter regularly:
- Sweep Attacks: These are low, sweeping strikes that cover a wide area. The best way to counter a sweep attack is to jump over it. Once airborne, you can often follow up with a jump kick by pressing the jump button again while in the air, dealing significant posture damage to the enemy.
- Thrust Attacks: These are forward-lunging attacks. The most effective counter for a thrust attack is the Mikiri Counter, a skill that must be learned. When an enemy lunges, dodge into the thrust at the last moment. Sekiro will stomp on the enemy's weapon, dealing massive posture damage and interrupting their attack.
- Grab Attacks: These are lunges where the enemy attempts to grab Sekiro. Grab attacks cannot be deflected and must be dodged. The timing can be tricky, so practice evading them. Some enemies, particularly larger ones, may have unique grab variations.
Successfully countering Perilous Attacks not only prevents damage but also builds up the enemy's Posture meter, making them vulnerable to a Deathblow. Mastering these counters is key to overcoming even the toughest opponents.
not all Perilous Attacks are created equal. Some enemies may have variations or combine them with other attacks. Always be ready to react to the red Kanji symbol, as it is your primary warning.
Key Strategies for Perilous Attacks:
- Observe Enemy Tells: Pay close attention to enemy animations leading up to a Perilous Attack.
- Master the Mikiri Counter: This skill is invaluable for dealing with thrusts.
- Utilize the Jump: Essential for avoiding sweep attacks and setting up follow-up attacks.
- Dodge Grabs: These are unblockable and require precise evasion.
- Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you face these attacks, the better your reaction time will become.
