Combat Arts are powerful special techniques in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice that consume Spirit Emblems to execute. Mastering and effectively utilizing these arts is crucial for overcoming the game's challenging enemies and bosses, offering unique offensive and defensive options.
What are Combat Arts?
Combat Arts are special moves that Sekiro can learn and equip. Unlike regular sword strikes, they require the expenditure of Spirit Emblems, a limited resource. Each Combat Art possesses a distinct animation, range, damage output, and utility, making them vital tools for adapting to different combat scenarios.
Acquiring Combat Arts
Combat Arts are learned through the Skill Tree, using Skill Points earned from defeating enemies and bosses. Once learned, they must be equipped at a Sculptor's Idol before they can be used in combat. Sekiro can only have one Combat Art equipped at a time.
Types of Combat Arts
Combat Arts vary widely in their function and application:
- Offensive Arts: These arts focus on dealing high damage or breaking enemy posture quickly. Examples include Ichimonji (which also recovers posture) and Mortal Draw (a devastating, high-cost attack).
- Defensive/Utility Arts: Some arts offer defensive benefits or utility. For instance, the Whirlwind Slash can hit multiple enemies in a wide arc, useful for crowd control.
- Posture-Focused Arts: Arts like Ichimonji are excellent for rapidly filling an enemy's Posture bar, leading to quick Deathblows.
Strategic Use of Combat Arts
Effective use of Combat Arts involves:
- Timing: Knowing when to deploy a Combat Art is crucial. They often have wind-up animations, making them risky to use against aggressive enemies. Look for openings after deflecting an attack or when an enemy is recovering.
- Spirit Emblem Management: Spirit Emblems are a finite resource. Use your Combat Arts judiciously, especially those with higher Emblem costs, and ensure you have ways to replenish them (e.g., through items or certain skills).
- Enemy Weaknesses: Different Combat Arts are more effective against certain enemies. For example, arts that deal high posture damage are excellent against heavily armored foes, while sweeping attacks are good against groups.
- Equipping the Right Art: Experiment with different Combat Arts and equip the one that best suits the current challenge or your preferred playstyle.
