Posture Meter Feature
The Posture Meter is a central mechanic in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, representing an enemy's (and Sekiro's) ability to withstand combat pressure. Unlike traditional Vitality-based combat, breaking an enemy's Posture is often the most efficient way to achieve a Deathblow and progress through encounters.
The Posture meter fills up as an enemy takes hits, blocks attacks, or is staggered. When the meter is full, the enemy becomes vulnerable to a Deathblow, regardless of their remaining Vitality. Conversely, Sekiro's own Posture meter fills when he blocks attacks or is hit repeatedly. If Sekiro's Posture breaks, he is staggered and vulnerable to a Deathblow.
Understanding and manipulating the Posture meter is key to mastering Sekiro's combat:
- Filling Enemy Posture:
- Deflection: Perfectly timed deflections deal significant Posture damage to enemies. This is the primary method for breaking their guard.
- Attacking: Landing hits on an enemy also contributes to their Posture damage, especially if they are blocking.
- Countering Perilous Attacks: Specific counters, like the Mikiri Counter against thrusts, deal substantial Posture damage.
- Managing Sekiro's Posture:
- Holding Block: Holding the block button (L1) allows Sekiro's Posture to recover faster than if he were actively blocking attacks.
- Creating Distance: Stepping back or dodging away from combat can give Sekiro's Posture meter time to recover.
- Avoiding Attacks: Dodging or successfully deflecting attacks prevents Posture buildup.
- Perilous Attacks: Enemies will sometimes use Perilous Attacks (indicated by a red Kanji symbol). These attacks cannot be blocked and must be countered using specific techniques:
- Thrust: Counter with Mikiri Counter.
- Sweep: Jump over and kick off the enemy.
- Grab: Dodge away.
The Posture system encourages an aggressive yet precise playstyle. Players are rewarded for engaging enemies directly, deflecting their attacks, and exploiting openings to break their guard, rather than simply chipping away at their health bar.
