Tackling Unique and Perilous Attacks
Mastering Sekiro's combat hinges on understanding and countering Perilous Attacks, saled by a red Kanji symbol. These unblockable moves require specific defensive techniques to avoid damage and create openings for your own offense.
There are four main types of Perilous Attacks: Sweep, Thrust, Grab, and Lightning. Sweep attacks, characterized by a low, sweeping motion, cannot be blocked or deflected. The optimal counter is to jump over the attack. Performing a jump off an enemy's head during a sweep can also deal significant Posture damage. Thrust attacks, indicated by a forward lunge, also cannot be blocked. While a well-timed deflect can mitigate damage, the most effective counter is the Mikiri Counter, which deals substantial Posture damage to the attacker.
Grab attacks are unblockable and often have a wide range. These require a precise step dodge or a well-timed jump to evade. Lightning attacks, typically performed by flying enemies, can be deflected but are extremely dangerous. The proper counter is to jump into the air as the lightning strikes, then press the attack button mid-air to redirect the lightning back at the enemy, stunning them and dealing massive damage.
Learning the tells for each Perilous Attack is crucial. Observing enemy animations and recognizing the red Kanji symbol will allow you to react accordingly. Successfully countering these attacks not only keeps Sekiro alive but also opens up opportunities for powerful counter-attacks and Deathblows, significantly shortening boss encounters and making even the most dangerous foes manageable.
