Sekiro's combat is a demanding yet rewarding dance of offense and defense, centered around posture management and precise timing. Mastering deflection, counter-attacks, and the use of Shinobi Prosthetic Tools is essential for overcoming the game's formidable foes and achieving victory.
The Core Mechanics: Deflection and Posture
Unlike many action games that focus solely on depleting an enemy's health bar, Sekiro emphasizes breaking an opponent's Posture. Posture is a measure of an enemy's stability. By successfully deflecting their attacks, you build up their Posture bar. Once their Posture is sufficiently high, they become vulnerable to a Deathblow, which can instantly defeat weaker enemies or remove one health bar from bosses.
- Deflection: Press the block button just as an enemy's attack is about to land. Perfect deflections deal significant Posture damage to the enemy and minimal chip damage to Sekiro's own Posture.
- Blocking: Holding the block button will block incoming attacks but will build up Sekiro's own Posture bar much faster.
- Posture Recovery: Both Sekiro and enemies can recover Posture over time. Staying aggressive and deflecting attacks prevents enemies from recovering.
Attack Types and Counterplay
Enemies use three main types of attacks, indicated by a Kanji symbol (危) appearing above their heads:
- Thrust Attacks: These can be countered with the Mikiri Counter (dodge forward just as the thrust lands). This deals massive Posture damage.
- Sweep Attacks: These must be jumped over. You can often follow up with a jump kick for additional Posture damage.
- Grab Attacks: These must be dodged away from.
Failure to counter these perilous attacks results in significant damage and Posture buildup.
Shinobi Prosthetic Tools and Combat Arts
Sekiro's arsenal is expanded by his Shinobi Prosthetic Tools, crafted using materials found throughout the world. These tools offer several offensive and defensive capabilities, such as the Loaded Axe for heavy damage, the Flame Vent for fire attacks, or the Loaded Shuriken for ranged harassment. Additionally, Combat Arts are special techniques learned from scrolls that consume Spirit Emblems but offer powerful, unique attacks.
Aggression and Rhythm
Sekiro's combat thrives on rhythm and aggression. Staying on the offensive, constantly deflecting and attacking, is often more effective than playing defensively. Learning the attack patterns of each enemy and boss is crucial to finding openings and executing successful counters. The game rewards players who can adapt to the flow of combat and react decisively to enemy actions.
