Dragonrot is a unique mechanic in Sekiro. Each time you die and resurrect, there's a chance that Dragonrot will spread to NPCs, making them cough and hindering their questlines. It also reduces your 'Unseen Aid' chance, which is the probability of not losing Sen and Skill Points upon death. Dragonrot can be cured using a Dragon's Blood Droplet at a Sculptor's Idol. These droplets are rare, so use them strategically, typically after many deaths or when an important NPC is afflicted. Don't let the fear of Dragonrot prevent you from learning through death.
