The game's narrative begins with a battle in northern Japan, leading to the defeat of a commander. A young man, later known as The Wolf (Sekiro), is adopted by The Owl and trained as a Shinobi. He becomes a retainer of Kuro, the Divine Heir. At the story's start, Sekiro loses his left arm and the Divine Heir to Ashina's commander. His arm is replaced by a Shinobi Prosthetic.
