Genichiro Ashina is a formidable boss encounter that tests the player's mastery of Sekiro's core combat mechanics. This fight is a significant skill check, often serving as a turning point for players in understanding the game's demanding rhythm. Genichiro employs several sword attacks, including swift combos, a powerful jumping thrust, and a bow that can quickly close distance or interrupt your actions. His posture bar is crucial; breaking it is the primary way to achieve a Deathblow. Maintaining your own posture is equally important, which is achieved by deflecting his attacks rather than simply blocking them. The Ashina Castle is the location where this pivotal battle takes place, and understanding the nuances of each phase is key to overcoming him.

The fight against Genichiro Ashina is divided into three distinct phases, each with its own challenges. In the first two phases, Genichiro wields his sword and bow with aggressive intent. He will often initiate combat with a flurry of sword strikes, followed by a bow shot, or a leaping thrust. Players must learn to parry these attacks to build his posture damage. A common mistake is to rely too heavily on dodging, which can leave you vulnerable to his follow-up attacks or allow him to recover his posture. The third phase, often referred to as "Way of Tomoe," sees Genichiro imbue his attacks with lightning. This phase introduces a new mechanic where You can redirect lightning back at him for significant damage and stun. Mastering the timing of the lightning reversal is essential for victory in this final phase.

Phase 1 & 2 Strategy

During the first two phases, focus on aggressive deflection. Genichiro's combos are designed to be parried. When he leaps into the air for a thrust attack, a well-timed deflect will stagger him, opening him up for a counter-attack. If he fires his bow, dodge to the side or deflect the arrows. Be wary of his perilous sweep attack; a jump and a stomp can counter this effectively. When he uses his perilous grab, dodge backward or to the side. The key is to remain close and constantly pressure his posture. Do not let him create too much distance, as he will use his bow to chip away at your health and reset the posture battle. Successfully breaking his posture in these phases will grant you a Deathblow.

Phase 3 (Way of Tomoe) Strategy

The third phase introduces lightning attacks. When Genichiro jumps into the air and charges lightning, you must also jump. While in the air, press the attack button to catch the lightning and then immediately press the attack button again to send it back at him. This will stun him and deal massive posture damage. If you fail to reverse the lightning, you will take significant damage and be stunned. He also gains a new perilous sweep attack in this phase, which can be countered with a jump and stomp. Continue to apply pressure and deflect his sword attacks as you did in the previous phases. The lightning reversal is the most critical mechanic to master here, as it significantly shortens the duration of this challenging final phase.
