Gyoubu Oniwa Strategy
Gyoubu Oniwa, the first major boss encountered at the Ashina Castle gate, is a mounted combat encounter that introduces You to fighting on horseback. This boss utilizes a large spear and relies on charges and sweeping attacks. The strategy involves using the environment, particularly the scattered debris, to your advantage and focusing on breaking Gyoubu's posture while he is dismounted.
Gyoubu Oniwa's primary attack is a devastating charge with his spear. When he charges, sprint to the side and dodge at the last moment to avoid being hit. After his charge, he often pauses briefly, providing an opportunity to land a few hits with your sword. He also has sweeping attacks that can be deflected, but due to his mounted position, dodging is often safer. The key to this fight is to use the "Grappling Hook" prosthetic to quickly close the distance or to reposition yourself.
When Gyoubu dismounts, this is your prime opportunity to inflict significant posture damage. He becomes much more vulnerable in close combat. Use the Mikiri Counter against his thrust attacks and deflect his sword swings. The Loaded Axe can be effective here for staggering him. The scattered debris around the arena can be used to interrupt his charges or to create temporary cover. If you are struggling to land hits, consider using the Firecrackers prosthetic to briefly stun him, allowing for a few free hits. Successfully defeating Gyoubu Oniwa rewards players with the "Memory: Gyoubu Oniwa," which can be exchanged for a powerful Combat Art, and a Prayer Bead.
