The Guardian Ape is a memorable and challenging boss in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, known for its erratic movements and powerful attacks. The first phase of this encounter is characterized by the ape's aggressive, beast-like assaults. It employs sweeping attacks with its arms, lunging charges, and a terrifying overhead slam. Players must focus on dodging its lunges and sweeping attacks, as deflecting them can be difficult due to their wide arcs. When the ape rears up to perform its overhead slam, this is a prime opportunity to attack its head. It also has a perilous grab attack that must be dodged; failure to do so results in significant damage. A key strategy for this phase is to stay close to the ape, as this often baits its more predictable attacks. Utilizing the Loaded Axe prosthetic tool can be effective for dealing heavy posture damage when the ape is recovering from an attack.

The second phase of the Guardian Ape fight introduces a new dynamic: the ape regains its head and becomes more agile, wielding a large sword. This phase shifts the combat significantly, requiring more precise deflections and a focus on its swordplay. The ape will perform sweeping combos with its sword, as well as a perilous thrust attack that can be countered with the Mikiri Counter. It also has a leaping sword attack that can be dodged. A crucial mechanic in this phase is the ape's ability to inflict Terror. Players must avoid its projectiles and certain sweeping attacks that can build up Terror. The strategy here involves deflecting its sword attacks to build its posture, while being mindful of its new moveset. When the ape pauses after a combo, it presents an opening for a few quick hits. The fight culminates in a Deathblow after successfully breaking its posture. Players who find themselves struggling should consider using the Firecrackers prosthetic tool to briefly stun the ape, creating openings for attacks or healing. Consuming items like the Ako's Sugar can also provide a temporary attack boost.
